Review

"If we are to survive and hopefully thrive as a species, Amos Clifford's book is a must-read. Clear and insightful, his writing is pure poetry. Our relationship to Nature can be renewed and Forest Bathing shows us how." --Rosita Arvigo, author of Rainforest Home Remedies and Sastun: My Apprenticeship with a Maya Healer"Mature forests produce an enigma to modern medicine: an airborne biochemical nectar, the essence of the trees. To walk in this sea of chemistry, and take it in through your senses, is called forest bathing. The healing is immediate. For most people, the synergy sweeps the body, mind and soul back into a holistic unit. Even as a child, Amos Clifford carried this wisdom in his heart. Let the wisdom in his book permeate yours." --Diana Beresford-Kroeger, author of The Global Forest and star of the new documentary Call of the Forest"M. Amos Clifford is a forest guide, psychotherapist, restorative justice worker, and longtime Zen meditation practitioner. His book is a beautiful exploration of forest bathing, a source of information on the medical and scientific evidence of its benefits, and a guide to all that's needed for a fulfilling forest-bathing practice." --Foreword Reviews, Kristine Morris, May/June 2018"In Your Guide to Forest Bathing, Amos Clifford asks: 'Remember watching clouds as a child, seeing the shapes of fantastic creatures appear and then morph slowly into something new? I wonder how many adults have in their minds that they will do this again, someday, when they are not too busy?' I hope you are not too busy to pick up this poetic and comprehensive book that invites you into the healing forest that Clifford knows so well, as a lifelong seeker and founder of the world's foremost organization training forest therapy guides. Take this invitation to revisit a world you may have abandoned as a child." -Melanie Choukas-Bradley, ANFT Certified Forest Therapy Guide and Author, The Joy of Forest Bathing, A Year in Rock Creek Park, and City of Trees"A joyful and insightful invitation to reconnect with forests. Amos Clifford is an outstanding guide to deepening our relationships within the community of life." --David George Haskell, author of The Songs of Trees and Pulitzer finalist, The Forest Unseen, Professor, University of the South"In this book, Amos weaves a precious tapestry of practical details, poetic imagining, and historical perspective on the practice of forest bathing. It's a delightful read that leaves you yearning for intimacy with nature." --Sylvie Rokab, award-winning filmmaker, Love Thy Nature"The scientific data confirming the mental, emotional, and biophysical benefits of forest bathing are most exciting and validating to me as an integrative physician. However, what makes this book rise to excellence is how Amos Clifford describes the experience of forest bathing so that your heart poetically engages. His writing magically unites us with the healing rhythms of nature to dissolve lingering issues and bring about profound peace of heart." --Philip Barr, MD, Duke Integrative Medicine"It helps to know that Nature is good for our mental and physical health! Clifford shares a detailed history of the practice of Forest Bathing and the health benefits of the practice. Our state has rich forest resources and this book inspires me to take a mindful walk in the Michigan woods." --Alyson Jones Turner, Source Booksellers"John Muir once said, 'between every two pine trees is a doorway leading to a new way of life.' Now Amos Clifford has given us a beautiful and inspiring guide inviting us to seek out the trees and let the healing happen, both for us and for our beleaguered ecosystems. Grab this book and head outside." --Florence Williams, author of The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier, and More Creative"In this book, Amos Clifford offers a delightful introduction to the healing power of forests--and to the natural world that supports wellness in our stress-filled society." --Yoshifumi Miyazaki, Ph.D., Chiba University, Japan, Forest Medicine researcher, author of Shinrin Yoku: The Japanese Art of Forest Bathing

Forest bathing is becoming a big buzzword, but how do you actually do it? And is it BS? This is a short, accessible guide on how to create a personal practice of connecting to nature for the health benefits -- for humans AND for nature. The clear, accessible writing lays out what we know intuitively (and is backed up by science): being in nature is good for us. Clifford outlines the elements of practice and how to tune into the senses to connect to nature. There are step-by-step instructions on how to "forest bathe" and "invitations". I appreciate that the author separates forest bathing out from "spiritual" practices. It's a culturally/spiritually neutral book, so anyone could benefit from the practice, even if they're allergic to new-age hippie BS. There's a practical section on what to bring, how to find a guide (if you want one), and how to stay safe.I teach and practice meditation, but I find forest bathing infinitely "easier". Rather than having to tune out my senses, I get to use, and dare I say, enjoy them! As someone who lives in an overstimulating urban environment, I appreciate a practice that lets me turn them back on -- which is apparently one of the big health benefits: improved attention and sensory regulation. (There are loads more; read the book!) Listening to the spring birds calling each other, watching the breeze carry the leaves in the canopy, sensing the squish of spring mud under my feet -- it just feels good and slows me down without me having to think about it so much. It's helped tons with my depression, anxiety, ADHD, Ehlers Danlo, neuroatypicalities, and sensory processing issues. Also included is a somewhat radical notion: spending time in relationship with nature is a form of activism. It makes sense -- once you're out in nature, noticing the connections and the ecosystem, it's harder to feel separate from it. I've noticed I've been making little changes that are good for the environment without really thinking about it -- I'm just a little more aware of how my actions affect the world around me.The best part of the book is that Clifford clearly has a deep relationship with and affection for the "more-than-human" world. It's inspiring. Highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a pretty easy way to unwind from modern life.

From the moment that I picked up this book and felt the soft texture of the cover, I was intrigued to read it and, as is stated on the cover, ‘Discover the Secrets of Shinrin-Yoku.’ I am a certified guide who has been introducing people to and guiding Forest Bathing walks for three years. In this book I found a most concise explanation of this practice, it’s health benefits, and how it can enhance our relationship with the natural world. Excellent guidelines are offered for experiencing a forest bathing walk for those new to the practice as well as for those who have been on many walks. I most enjoyed the suggestions for invitations, or suggestions of ways to connect with nature, that can be explored on a forest bathing walk. Explanations and instructions throughout this book are clear and can be followed with ease. I highly recommend this book for anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of the forest bathing practice.

Thorough and accessible is how I would describe this fantastic little book. You won't be sorry you bought it. The author does a fantastic job. The eight-day Forest Therapy Guide training is also superb and the most extensive training available.

Not only is this book highly fascinating and informative, I felt as if Amos were reading it aloud from a tree-stump in the woods. His voice comes through in the soothing, comforting, articulate and passionate way that is just pure Amos Clifford. The Standard Sequence of forest bathing, as created by Amos, is laid out in a way that is not only logical and effective, but is also replicable. This book is it: THE fundamental foundation of forest bathing as we know it in the U.S. today. It's your guide written by THE guide. I'm thrilled that it is finally on paper for millions to learn from and enjoy.

I became interested in the subject of Forest Bathing upon reading an article in TIME magazine concerning the health benefits of walking in the forest amidst nature. Unfortunately, this book didn't appeal to me because it moved too slowly.I gave up reading before finishing its content. I'll donate it to my library as others may be interested in the subject matter.

Bought because I had heard about it on MPR. This book reinforced what I already knew. Nature is centering. Not a compelling read for me personally.

Well written and organized. I totally connect to nature and have intuitively been doing this for years. With that said I still picked up a few things that I can add to my practice. I put this book in every tree house for guests to have ideas on how to connect to our property, themselves and others. I don't understand people that viewed this less than 5 stars. I wonder if they tried any of the invitations.

The methods are interesting and novel, but the underlying mindset is not new and follows that of the English Romantic poets, the pioneer generally considered Robert Burns. The book closes with a thought about man’s domination of nature and the need for a feeling of oneness. Consider the 2nd stanza of Burns, To A Mouse where a farmer addresses a mouse whose home has just been destroyed by a plow: I am truly sorry man’s dominion has broken nature’s social union and justifies that ill opinion that make thee startle at me, earth-bound companion and fellow mortal. Or maybe the end of Coleridge’s Rime of the Ancient Mariner ( “ All things both great and small.......THe good lord that madeth us made and loveth all”).
