Do you want the taste of rick, thick, homemade chocolate cakes without all the fuss of measuring flour and sugar and cream of tartar? Heres your answer! Chocolate from The Cake Mix Doctor by Anne Byrn is a great resource for busy cooks. My favorite recipe from this book is the A Lighter Chocolate Pound Cake on page 109. I used this recipe for a three-dimensional stand-up teddy bear cake. No one even noticed that it was lower in fat!As if the recipes themselves were not enough, there are tips and tricks sprinkled throughout the cook. For example, How to cut the first slice of cake like a pro on page 35. These hints and tricks really added value to this book. While there are lighter recipes in this cookbook, this book is not for the cholesterol conscious. Many of the recipes begin with adding a stick of butter to the cake mix. While it tastes delicious, the nutrition information is not provided.I use this book often it is speckled with remnants of chocolate cake mixes. My only suggestion for improvement for this book is please make it spiral bound!!!!

I was always a snobby from scratch baker until I discovered the Cake Dr. Books.; now I use cake mixes all the time. The secret is "doctoring" them per her recipes, and making the frosting instead of using the canned chemical junk. The combination of enhanced mix cakes plus homemade frosting is terrific. I have made her white chocolate pound cake with a lemon glaze that was raved about. The Kahlua cake and the mint chocolate cakes are also fabulous. Make no mistake-even though using mixes is a shortcut you have to add ingredients like sour cream, cream cheese, extra eggs, to make them rich and to eliminate the chemical taste. Using a mix is a time saver over from-scratch baking, but the big advantages of using mixes (in my opinion) are not only the convenience, but the consistent results, you can count on 'em to turn out the same each time. You can't just dump the mix in a bowl following the back of box instructions and throw canned frosting on top and expect it to taste good. The key to scrumptious cake mix cakes is following the Cake Dr.'s recipes and making homemade frosting, and her frosting recipes are delicious. The only "con" is that there isn't a picture of every cake; that's not a problem for me but I know it may be for some people.

This is my second time buying this book. Our home flooded and I lost my original. This was one of my lost cookbooks that I knew I HAD to replace. I have used this so many times over the years. This is my go to source when I need to take something to a potluck or just want a special dessert for a special occasion. The Kentucky Bourbon Fudge Pie alone is worth the cost of the book, which brings up the point that there is more than just cakes in the book. Highly recommend.

I'm a guy that likes to bake in my spare time and found this book very useful. I really like baking "from scratch" but I have a problem keeping things tidy while doing so - sometimes my kitchen looks like a flour factory exploded in it. This book give great tips on making a better tasting cake from a mix, which helps keep things much neater.I really liked the section on icings and frostings which, to me, which are essential for a good cake (on most cakes). This book is helpful and priced right from Amazon.

The condition of the book, overall was in excellent condition. The “tips” of the front cover showed some usage, but still in great condition. My only fault with the book was the photos with the recipes were small and not in color. There is the reference for each cake at the front of the book, but I would have preferred to not having to flip back and forth to see what my recipe would look like.

I purchased both of the Cake Doctor books and I love them. This one...the Chocolate Cake Doctor...is my favorite. I was able to make a Tunnel of Fudge Bundt Cake (page 98), which was the first cake I ever baked when I was younger...but it's no longer sold as a box mix. It was easy and so much fun to revive a favorite. Then the holidays rolled around and I decided on Debbie's Dazzling Red Velvet Cake (page 88). This was a huge hit!!! It is so beautiful that no one would ever think that you started with a box mix and it is truly dazzling on your holiday table. Instead of red raspberries, I simply topped it with some red and green sugar sprinkles. It's so easy that I made it for each Christmas party that we attended and I made one for Christmas Eve dinner at our house. Everyone raved about how pretty it was...and how yummy it was!I can't wait to try more...

This was the second Cake Mix Doctor book I purchased (the original being my first), and I loved it almost as much as the original. You will find that maybe just a few cake recipes have been copied over from the first, but that's because they were chocolate and should be in here obviously. The 'fan favorite' is the German Chocolate cake. I am normally a from-scratch baker and wouldn't have never dreamed of ever using canned frosting on a cake...but IN the cake yielded amazing results! This cake is a little sweet for me a I prefer deep, dark chocolate butter cakes, but everyone else loves when I make it. And not all the cake recipes are for dark chocolate cakes. There are even some white chocolate recipes and frostings thrown into the mix as well. Lots of great variety even though this is a 'chocolate' cake book.

There is nothing wrong with baking with a cake mix. I have made two recipes from the book and they are both really tasty: triple decker raspberry chocolate cake and chunky walnut chocolate cookies. The cookies were really cheap ($) and delicious and the cake turned out professional looking. Very easy to follow, it is also easy to see what modifications need to be made for the regular "Cake Mix Doctor" book that the author published previously. Buy this book, or the other one and you won't regret it.UPDATEI have made the White Chocolate Peach and Raspberry Cupcakes, White Chocolate Pound Cupcake with caramel frosting, and the Darn Good Chocolate (Cup)cake with Marta's Chocolate Frosting. They were very good, but one thing is that the frostings never take as long as it says in the instructions. If it says 10 minutes, I would say plan for 20.

Last Hope Island: Britain, Occupied Europe, and the Brotherhood That Helped Turn the Tide of War, by Lynne Olson

Review

“Last Hope Island is a book to be welcomed, both for the past it recovers and also, quite simply, for being such a pleasant tome to read. . . . Certain of these refugee groups have had their stories told before . . . but Olson’s book is the first to weave this all together. . . . It’s a well-written and well-illustrated book, and deeply researched.”—The Washington Post  “In Last Hope Island [Lynne Olson] argues an arresting new thesis: that the people of occupied Europe and the expatriate leaders did far more for their own liberation than historians and the public alike recognize. . . . The scale of the organization she describes is breathtaking.”—The New York Times Book Review   “A brisk and compelling portrait of wartime Britain.”—The Wall Street Journal “[A] pointed volume . . . [Olson] tells a great story and has a fine eye for character.”—The Boston Globe“Spellbinding . . . [a] masterful account of England in World War II . . . [Olson] brings both a journalist’s eye and a novelist’s command of character and setting to this subject. . . . For American readers inclined to begin their World War II reading after U.S. entry into the conflict, Last Hope Island opens a fascinating trove of stories, characters and facts. . . . Olson’s book, ten years in the making, not only helps illuminate the past but also serves as an insightful backdrop for today’s discussion of the future of twenty-first-century European alliances.”—BookPage, “Top Pick”“A rip-roaring saga of hairbreadth escape, espionage, and resistance during World War II, Lynne Olson’s Last Hope Island salvages the forgotten stories of a collection of heroic souls from seven countries overrun by Hitler who find refuge in Churchill’s London and then seek payback in ways large and small. In thrilling fashion, Olson shows us that hell hath no fury like a small country scorned.”—Erik Larson, New York Times bestselling author of Dead Wake “Lynne Olson is a master storyteller, and she brings her great gifts to this riveting narrative of the resistance to Hitler’s war machine. You will be thrilled and moved—and enraged, saddened, and shocked—by the courage and steadfastness, human waste and stupidity, carelessness and nobility, of an epic struggle. Last Hope Island is a smashing good tale.”—Evan Thomas, New York Times bestselling author of Being Nixon “In a series of compelling books in recent years, Lynne Olson has established herself as an authoritative and entertaining chronicler of perhaps the largest single event in human history—the Second World War. Now comes Last Hope Island, a powerful and surprising account of how figures from Nazi-occupied Europe found Great Britain an essential shield and sword in the struggle against Hitler. This is a wonderful work of history, told in Olson’s trademark style.”—Jon Meacham, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of American Lion “You wouldn’t think that there would still be untold tales about World War II, but Lynne Olson, a master of that period of history, has found some. Not only does she narrate them with her usual verve, but her book reminds us how much we unthinkingly assume that it was the United States and Britain alone who defeated the Nazis in Western Europe. Last Hope Island is a valuable, and immensely readable, corrective.”—Adam Hochschild, New York Times bestselling author of King Leopold’s Ghost“This is a history book that reads like the best thrillers. . . . Olson offers a fascinating view of the war and its aftermath, less from a military than from a high-level civilian perspective. . . . The many individuals are finely drawn, major developments are well covered, and the book provides an unusual and very insightful angle on the war.”—Booklist (starred review)

Lynn Olson is an American historian who has written several bestselling books on the Second World War era. I have personally read her booksThose Angry Days, Citizens of London and Troublesome Young Men. This new work is an exciting account of the importance of Great Britain to allied nations who had been conquered by the evil Nazis. Charl;es DeGaulle directed efforts to free France from his London quarters while rulers like Queen Wilhelmina of Holland King Haakon of Norway broadcast over the BBC to their captive peoples on the continent. From England came spy missions directed by M16 and SOE into captive Europe. Many of the agents sent abroad died as did the brave people of occupied Europe who provided food, shelter and hope to them. Brave Europeans guided downed fliers and stranded soldiers to neutral France. The resistance helped provide for the Allied invasion of June 6, 1944 by covert actions against the German army. We see how important scientists were rescued by British operatives who assured their participation in the breaking of the Enigma Code used by the Germans. Many rescued scientists also took part in planning for the nuclear bombs used against Japan. This is an exciting book dealing with all the cloak and dagger spy activity more fascinating and scary than anything conjured up by a fiction author.I found it especially moving to hear of the hunger and suffering of the captive people of Europe in Holland, France, Belgium, Poland and Czechoslovakia. The contribution of Polish airmen during the Battle of Britain in 1940 was inspiring. Olson includes many stories about real life men and women who were real heroes in the long and bloody fight against Fascism. I was surprised to learn of the bitter bureaucratic infighting that occurred between SOE and M16 as well as DeGaulle and FDR's mutual hatred. The book is well researched, written and is not boring. Period photos enhance the reading experience. Another outstanding work by popular historian Olson. Well done!

This book is a treasure for any history buffs, or anyone who lived through this era. It's beautifully written. I'll rave about this book to my friends, but NO ONE will be allowed to borrow it! Any reader of this fine history will appreciate the immense amount of research that went into compiling this excellent writing.

This is an excellent book. I have read numerous books about World War II. This book deals with matters and events of which I knew little and have seen next to nothing in the books I have read. It brings light to the contributions made to the allied war effort by nations that were overrun by the Nazis and that set up their governments in the island of Great Britain to carry on their resistance to the Nazis during the occupation of their countries. Their contributions actually contributed substantially to the allied war effort. The Polish air squadrons, for example, played a big part in the Battle of Britain. Their experience in fighting the Nazis when their country was overrun was invaluable in that battle. The book also addresses the failures of the British, seeming in large part from their arrogance that they knew how to do things better than the leaders of the conquered countries. The SOE, in particular. At one time I wanted to scream and pull my hair out. The SOE agents were trained in how to communicate their intelligence via radio, and that they always needed to start with a special code so that the SOE people in Britain would know that their reports had not been compromised. They sent an SOE agent into Holland who was immediately captured. They compelled him to act like all was well and to send back reports with information they wanted sent. He eventually did so, but of course intentionally left out the verification code. The British thought, well, he must have forgot. So, for well over a year the Germans played the English, sho sent numerous agents into Holland, all of whom were immediately caught and many of them executed. These newly captured agents also sent reports back to England, leaving off the verification code. The British couldn't figure out why their agents kept forgetting the code, at least until they received a radio transmission from the German high command thanking them for sending all of their agents, equipment, ammunition and supplies directly to the Germans for over a year. The same thing happened in France. But, when a compromised agent left off his verification code, the British monitors in England radioed back that he had forgot to use his code and to please use it next time. Of course, then the Germans knew a code was required. The stupidity is mind boggling. So stupid, in fact, that even today the British cannot bring themselves to admit their errors. There are also many very human stories, of resistance leaders in the occupied countries taking daring action that put their lives at risk. Even by people you would never suspect could be so heroic. When the operation Market Garden, the landing of paratroopers at Arnhem, turned into a complete fiasco, many ordinary people in Holland risked their lives to hide solderers, many of which developed bonds of friendship that lasted the rest of their lives. In fact, it was extraordinary and very touching. But I won't give it away. All in all, this is an excellent book and highly recommended and not just for those that are World War II buffs.

This book is an outstanding and informative guide and reference for understanding the complexity of “Infinite Jest”. Be sure to look at the many charts at the end of the book especially the one that details timeline for the chapters.

I just completed reading Infinite Jest for the second time (first time was about 12 years ago) and I was looking for a book to plainly and clearly explicate the intricate story line and relationship between all the characters. In my opinion, Elegant Complexity does an excellent job of this. This book has helped me to understand better what exactly is going on in Infinite Jest, even after the second read. The book essentially is a chapter by chapter analysis of Infinite Jest. It does a very good job of teasing out the different plot threads and relationships between the characters, while helpfully highlighting the interplay between Infinite Jest and other literary works, e.g., Hamlet and A Clockwork Orange. Some might find the book a bit tiresome, especially when compared to Infinite Jest itself. But if you are looking for a well organized reference guide to Infinite Jest then I recommend it highly.

This guide to Infinite Jest justified itself alone by being able to string together all the uses of the color blue. I had tacked Infinite Jest (IJ) this past summer and while I found it a wild ride, was left with several major questions. Elegant Complexity did not spell out the answers, but helped me see the guide wires enough to find my own way through. I was shocked at how large this guide was, it gave IJ a run for its money. I would suggest using Elegant Complexity the same way I did, as a reader for those who have already finished IJ. Elegant Complexity definitely improved and enhanced my enjoyment of IJ.

Having made the commitment to tackle this opus, I found myself scouring the Internet after every chapter, hoping others had left a trail of breadcrumbs through the woods. At about pg. 200 (and completely hooked), I knew it was time for a serious road map. Carlisle's chapter summaries are wonderful; he doesn't tell you what to think but rather highlights intriguing lines and phrases that you might have missed the first or fifth time through. His chronology is indispensable. No spoilers, but he brings recurring motifs and themes to the forefront so you're more likely to remember when you see them again. And let's be honest: the greatest challenge (and fun) of reading IJ is remembering all the whats and whos. I had already assumed I'd have to read the book a second time to catch all the clues and references. Thanks to this guide, I know where to look.

I gave this five stars but of course this is because I'm a major Infinite Jest and DFW fan. For newcomers, I would suggest starting with his story collections and non-fiction writings first to get accustomed with his style, Then start with his first novel Broom of the System to get a taste of what a DFW novel is like before diving into Infinite Jest. Then you will find this book, Elegant Complexity by Mr. Greg Carlisle very valuable for added insight and understanding on IJ.

I agree with Oakley and towercity. This book is almost entirely plot summary and even that is not done as well as it should be. Very little analysis. You won't learn much (if anything) of Wallace's skills here. Sorry I bought it.

Impossible to read IJ without this handy companion. The author spent years compiling it with obsessive attention to detail.

This is a great companion to Infinite Jest. I read it chapter by chapter with the Wallace.
