This provides stats on new creatures and will also include an adventure to go with the weird critters it lists. Both creatures and stories are well written. Review

"Brake's clearly argued thesis is a powerful alternative to more standard feminist views that would eliminate marriage as an institution. The author makes a very important contribution to all aspects of the current marriage debates. Highly recommended."--CHOICE"Brake carefully examines a range of views on marriage, from conservative moralists to feminist and queer theorists, and then offers a novel and compelling proposal for legal and institutional reform. For scholars, students, and anyone interested in the current political struggle to define marriage, this book builds the case for change from its thorough critique of the moral and political foundations of marriage."--Laurie Shrage, Florida International University in Miami

A persuasive look at why marriage should be extended beyond exclusive, central, different-sex and same-sex dyadic amorous relationships to include all caring relationships. The language can get a little technical at times, especially in the later chapters, and Brake sometimes repeats herself, but overall a perfectly readable book for the layperson. Brake's argument for why it's morally acceptable to break wedding vows is interesting, even though I didn't entirely buy it.

Elizabeth Brake's _Minimizing Marriage_ is one of the most interesting, well-written, and well-argued books about the future of marriage written in a long while. While there is a voluminous academic literature on same-sex marriage, surprisingly, little has been written about the disestablishment (abolition) of civil marriage (w/ the notable exception of Tamara Metz's _Untying the Knot_) and its being replaced with a more inclusive, marriage-like status that doesn't privilege monogamy, different-sex or same-sex. Brake argues that the state can and should remain in the marriage business, so to speak, provided that it has a sufficiently neutral or public reason for offering such a legal status. That reason is the promotion of care in intimate relationships that do not have to only involve two persons or be premised upon a romantic or sexual relationship. Brake is a moral and political philosopher but she writes in a manner that is not only admirably jargon-free but she also includes real-world examples that make her work less abstract than it otherwise would be and therefore, more accessible to someone who isn't trained as an analytical philosopher. In short, I couldn't recommend this book more highly for anyone who is interested in where the debate over same-sex marriage is likely to lead.

Great little book about everything that is wrong with marriage.

Great book. Brake writes succinctly and fits an amazing amount of information in her book. It's a fun read if you're curious about this institution.

Feminism has basically destroyed the value of marriage, as such, in the USA. From a man's point of view... Would you sleep with a poisonous snake? No? Women are worse than that, in the USA. Getting married is a major energy drain, risk of destruction, and is simply no longer productive, for men. It's that simple. LISTEN UP, guys: women can accuse men of anything- AND NEITHER THE COPS NOR THE COURTS LISTEN TO THE MAN'S SIDE. Got that? If you don't trust the woman, don't have anything to do with her. Black people in the old South did better in court, than men in courts, when accused by women. You WILL be lynched, if a woman complains. Marriage is a very high maintenance, low reward state to be in, with major risks. Think about it. Would you enter a lottery, with a better than 50% chance of losing half your income, and possessions? Or as Bill Burr says, "Oh, here's the line where I can lose half my stuff, and income. I'm in!" I have a friend at work, who dated a woman- first in her class at Wellesley, very smart, gorgeous, and so on. She dumped him, which he later realized was a blessing. Intelligence and drive in a woman is good- if it is helpful. If it is used against her husband, it is not useful. Here are some reasons why this book is important- at least 2 parents in a family really do make a difference:More Statistics on Fatherlessness: CHILDREN NEED BOTH PARENTS It is a Fact! Here is why: · 63% of youth suicides are from fatherless homes. (Source: U.S. D.H.H.S., Bureau of the Census). · 90% of all homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes. · 85% of all children that exhibit behavioral disorders come from fatherless homes. (Source: Center for Disease Control). · 80% of rapist motivated by displaced anger come from fatherless homes. (Source: Criminal Justice and Behavior, Vol. 14, pp. 403-26). · 71% of all high school dropouts come from fatherless homes. (Source: National Principals Assoc. Report on the State of High Schools). · 85% of all youths sitting in prisons grew up in a fatherless home. (Source: Fulton County Georgia jail populations, Texas Dept. Of Corrections, 1992). These statistics mean that children from fatherless homes are: · 5 times more likely to commit suicide · 32 times more likely to run away · 20 times more likely to have behavioral disorders · 14 times more likely to commit rape · 9 times more likely to drop out of high school · 20 times more likely to end up in prison. Listen to Tom Leykis. Women have been treating men badly since the 1960's- and Tom's show was the top of any media outlet, in California. Tom says that children are indeed much better off in a 2 parent family- but that there are NO benefits to being a man, in such a family, and MANY reasons why this is becoming an increasingly worse idea. This is Really Good!

This book is packed with wisdom and it just makes you feel good reading it. Whether you are an entrepreneur, artist, or someone trying to figure out your next project or next theme of your life, this book is for you!Derek does an outstanding job simplifying the lessons through his life and business experience. Here's a couple key points that hit home:1. It should NEVER be about the money. If you're in a business or pursuing a dream for the money chase, that chase will lead you down the wrong path.2. It's always about the customer. Whenever making a business decision, Derek always asks what would the customer say about this decision I'm making. So many cool stories of the simple small things Derek did that his customers loved.3. Business (or lifestyle) should be based around what you want. It should be your utopia, too many entrepreneurs try to please other people, investors, etc. and lose sight of what really matter to them. Derek explains this process through his incredible business journey.Thank you Derek for bring this book to the world!!

I added this to my list of books to read after it being recommended by Shawn Blanc's monthly book club. Although new books go to the bottom of my list, this one looked like a quick read and given Easter Monday I was able to consume within the hour. What I liked about this book was Siver's open and honest approach to running a business. To him, it is about having fun, being happy and ultimately about the customer; money didn't play a role. It is certainty a healthy approach to have in a business however sometimes I think reality can bite into this approach given our fast paced world of technology and disruption. There were many anecdotes on both his successes and failures along with lessons we can all take from it. For example, the tried and true test of trusting and verifying, to delegate but not abdicate and to make every decision based on the impact to the customer. I don't believe that this approach to business works carte blanche in every industry and idea however there are some great fundamentals for any entrepreneur to take on board with a new venture.Three key takeaways from the book:1. Delegation is key in the business (especially when you grow), however, with delegation trust but verify. Furthermore delegation doesn't not mean abdication.2. If you're not saying "Hell Yeah!" to an idea/approach etc. then say no!3. Siver's Tao of Business: Care about your customers more than about yourself and you'll do well.

A nice, easy and brief read that's a manifestation of distilled knowledge acquired over decades of experience starting and building CDbaby. I've always enjoyed reading Derek's writing because it's so honest. He's genuine. When most business books tell you to maximize profitability and sell when the market tells you it's the right time to sell, Derek tells you to maximize your happiness and sell when your heart tells you it's the right time. The wisdom in this book reaches beyond business and entrepreneurship. The bites of gold sprinkled throughout this text are signposts to a path that should take you on a journey of a life well lived. Highly recommended.

I used to be a fan of the self-help books, all the way from Norman Vincent Peale to Dale Csrnegie to Anthony Robbins. The point of all of the reading was to just learn about living life at a higher frequency. But I started to move away from these because they made things look so very easy, to the point where I think they are almost irrelevant to the real world.I was brought to this book through Seth Godin's Blog. It was an excellent read to me because it seemed to be a very honest and realistic discourse. The points of inspiration in this book are not Pollyanna-ish in the least. Sivers made errors, retreated, emerged, retreated again and then emerged again. Ups and downs. No smooth path. And he relates it very clearly.I have built a successful business over the past 7 years but I have not enjoyed the ride. I am always looking to the end. But now that things are much better, I look back and see that I could have really enjoyed the process much more, and really it is the process that is the juice for me.Sivers distills this very very well in writing about his experiences. Reading this has shaken me up tonight and brought to the forefront of my mind thoughts that I need to make some serious changes finally that will make me happier and my business more successful.Thank you Derek Sivers for this book!

I truly enjoyed this one hour read. I've been telling my business owner friends for years that they don't own companies. Their companies own them. Derek Sivers is one of the few who understand that a company is not there to provide you with a place to sit all day long while your spouse and kids get old without your presence. If that is what you're into, probably not a book for you! If you want to learn to let go and let your business provide you with the kind of life you want, this is exactly the book you should read.
