A Little History of British Gardening, by Jenny Uglow

From Publishers Weekly

Uglow, who won the PEN International Prize for History for Lunar Men, turns her attention from English inventors and scholars to English gardens. Her aim is modest, she writes, "a quest to uncover the gardens, plots and people of Britain in the past," and with this, she wonderfully captures the gardening of both the poor and the elite. She cleverly arranges her history into four parts that follow the stages of a growing plant: "Seed," "Leaf," "Flower," "Fruit." It was the Romans, she explains, who, seeing little outside of wheat and cattle farms, "created our first plant-filled spaces intended purely for enjoyment." In the second part, she brings to light the gardening style and culture of the Jacobeans ("by now gardening was so entwined with courtly culture"); in "Flower," she appropriately discusses Victoriana; and in the final part, she brings gardening up to the 20th century. Highlighting this beautifully written history are lovely reproductions of historic etchings, calendars, books, stained glass and drawings of garden plans in both b&w and color. From The New Yorker

Uglow's brisk history starts with Roman attempts to adapt to the English climate (a summer divan found in one ruin is "a mark of real optimism") and whisks us through a panorama of monastery herb gardens, medieval walled gardens, Tudor knots, and Restoration parterres. She's alert to the way that fashion gradually edged out mere utility, as she explains the landscaping craze of the eighteenth century, the flower-bed craze of the Victorians, and the current vogue for vegetables grown for decorative effect. Leavening the welter of fact with personal asides, she relishes the dottier manifestations of horticultural single-mindedness, like Francis Carew's method of providing Elizabeth I with out-of-season cherries (a damp canvas cover to keep the tree cool in summer), and John Evelyn's pleasingly unworkable plan to counter seventeenth-century London pollution by surrounding the capital with an enormous border of flowers. Great book on the evolution of gardening, garden tools, the way plants affect our lives and so on. As a gardener I was entertained and fascinated and learned a lot of interesting tidbits. Well written and enjoyable, I'd definitely recommend it for any level of gardener.

Thanks.

#45,555 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This book is way too long. Seriously it could have been half the length, but I suspect the author kept piling words because it's in Kindle Unlimited. It is so repetitious. NO ONE would act like these people. I mean they're thirty and they're doing a lemonade stand to make money? Seriously? Felix's boss is so unrealistic. I get that this is fantasy, but should people then just act like morons because it's fantasy? I don't think so.Also, too much sex. It became boring not hot. I'm not a prude at all, but there is way too much sex in this book. Again, I suspect for word count. There is so much sex I started skipping the scenes because they were all the same. They felt cut and pasted. (I mean their whipping their junk out while riding the motorcycle. SERIOUSLY?) The only connection they seem to have is sexual and they literally have sex constantly. When Felix isn't sobbing. And the omega, Felix, for goodness sake. He is such a wimpy loser. He is constantly crying and repeating the same stuff to himself about how he'll never be forgiven, blah, blah, blah. And not just crying but SOBBING. And the way he won't ever tell the truth or come clean about anything is so annoying. It goes on WAY too long. WAY TOO LONG. And the reason for all of the drama from years ago, such a ridiculous reason to have broken up with Kade. It's so weak it's dumb.I really disliked this book on so many levels. It was dreadfully boring. I guess that's pretty obvious by my review. I rarely leave reviews of books but this one was icky, and long and mind numbingly bad.

I liked the story but it could have been a lot shorter. Usually a book as long as this one would have a lot happen but it seemed to be the same scenario over and over again. Plus, many of those repeat scenes were just sandwiched around extra sex scenes which, while hot, could have been paired down as well. I also wish the author had provided background on the types of alphas.I am going to read the next in the series because I like male pregnancy stories and those where same sex relationships are the norm instead of regarded as an oddity.

I was able to get past the first person present tense writing, which is a bit difficult at times. And the ending was delightful. But the first 60% of the story was pretty much the same thing over and over - all “oh, I shouldn’t have done that 5 years ago” and “why did he do that 5 years ago”Really, miscommunication as a plot device only works for a while, especially if there’s not a lot of other action in the book.I have bought the next in the series, since I see the foreshadowing and hope the next book moves along more quickly.

Kade and Felix were good. I really enjoyed the chemistry they had. Felix had issues from the past that he really needed to get over and Kade had his own personal insecurities from the past to deal with. Because of Felix's issues he lied to Kade about they baby he carried. I loved how the story line was written. It gave good details and descriptions and I could feel the emotions from both MC's. She was able to take us on a great journey with them. I was so happy for the end and to see the HEA they both deserved. I received an ARC and read it voluntarily for an honest review.

Overall, I liked this book. I loved that Felix and Kade had been bondmates for many years and loved the scenes of them as kids. I totally devoured the beginning of the book and adored the last 10%. Things slowed down and dragged on for a while in the middle and I found myself getting frustrated. Frustrated with Felix's lying and hiding the truth. Frustrated that they just wouldn't talk to each other. They acted like immature kids rather than the 30 year old men they were supposed to be. I could understand Kade hiding his feelings and not wanting to set himself up for heartbreak again but Felix just made me angry. He could have handled things much better but since Kade forgave him, we can blame the pregnancy hormones. And since I read this book because it was MPreg....I was thrilled that we got the whole pregnancy and birth. If Felix's brother, Taylor, gets knocked up in Book 2, I'm totally there!

This was the first book I've read by Anna Wineheart and it definitely won't be the last. I absolutely fell in love with Kade and his never-wavering love for Felix. Now, Felix is a different story...there were numerous times I wanted to shake him because he wouldn't tell Kade the truth, he kept inventing stories. When he finally did forgive himself, talked with Kade and was loved in spite of his flaws, life was good. And we were given some views of their life after the HEA which was a happy change from the HEA being the last sentence of the book. Thanks, Anna!

Enough misunderstandings and ommision fo smash your heart to smithereens. Wow! Angst much! Felix's dad was unrelenting until the end of the story where he grew a heart like the grinch did. Felix's ex boss Rick was an @sshat and D bag who should be locked up. Felix was a bit of a drama queen in his own head much of the time. I wish Felix had been stronger 5 years ago to avoid time lost and heartaches. Smh.

Felix and Kade have too many lies between them, dealt by both of them. They were very young when they bonded but they thought they would last. Their time apart was disappointing to read because they were with other people. I would like to think part of their bond was monogamy, even while separated and especially because of their depth of feelings for one another.

We gave this to our son who is an avid ski jumping fan. He was very pleased with the book; I enjoyed the authentic cover illustration. Very interesting--not the usual "history" book.
