I should have done more research and checked out the number of pages of this little book. I was disappointed and it may be my own fault. But this book is very thin, more like a chapter of a book or perhaps a pamphlet. The information might be helpful for someone new to carving but it's nothing that isn't already in the front chapters of many other more extensive books on the subject. It could be helpful for someone who wanted to carve one particular type of character. It does have some nice pictures to stimulate the imagination but not much on how to do anything but the one main carved figure shown in the step by steps. I'll probably find someone to give this to who wants to start whittling.

When I decided to pick up a caricature carving book I was thrilled by the number of titles available. This excitement soon turned to confusion as I tried to decide which books to add to my cart and which to leave on the Amazon.com shelf. A large part of the problem was that most of the books within the field of caricature carving seemed to carry a 4 or 5 star rating which prevented me from enacting Rule No.1 of my AMAZON RULE OF PURCHASE which states: All things being equal, purchase the item with the highest customer rating. So with Rule No.1 nullified I found myself pouring over page after page of LOOK INSIDE in an attempt to narrow down my choices. Unfortunately, that wasn't much help either so I took the unprecedented step of just buying EVERY caricature carving book I could find that carried a 4 or 5 star rating.10 days and 5 titles later I'm ready to offer you my feedback, based on a few essential criteria, in the hopes that I'll save you both the time and the money I invested. Before I get to my ratings, let me run down the criteria I used to make my assessments:1) Larger books with good color photography trump smaller books with black & white photography.2) Books that provide step-by-step instruction are far superior than photographic collections of finished projects.3) Books that provide complete instruction, from wood selection to painting techniques, are better than books offering scant or piecemeal instruction.4) Because individual carvers have unique styles, I found that the books that contained the works of numerous carvers were far more instructional than those containing the works of just one carver. With those 4 criteria in mind, my top 5 caricature carving books are:1) Caricature Carving: Expert Techniques & 30 All-Time Favorite Projects ~ The BEST of the bunch. Wonderful photographs outlining the steps required to carve the works of numerous different artists. Instructions run from wood selection all the way to paint selection with everything in between including which tools to use. If you have a limited budget or you just want to own one caricature carving book then this is the one for you. 5 STARS2) Caricature Carvers Showcase ~ Unlike the #1 selection, this title does not include ANY step-by-step instructions on carving so if you're looking for an instructional guide, this ISN'T it. So why do I rate it so highly? Because it contains wonderful color photographs of the work of 50 different carvers; and while it's a mystery HOW the artists created their work, you can't help but shake your head in amazement at the finished product. 4½ STARS3) Whittling Little Folk ~ A smaller text from a single artist. The work here is more basic than most caricature carvers which is not necessarily a bad thing for the novice carvers among us. Good step-by-step color photography. The first 2 projects are covered in detail from wood selection to final coat of paint. The final 15 or so projects are described in far less detail. Not as flashy as some of the other titles, but this one grew on me and was actually the source book for my very first carving effort. 4 STARS4) Caricature Carving from Head to Toe ~ A decent text that contains thorough, step-by-step instructions and photographs leading to the creation of an elderly gentleman caricature. The book contains the work of just one artist so you'll garner just one perspective which I think is a major limitation. A gallery of the artists work rounds out the text, and while his work is of the highest quality it's not as varied as that of a collection of artists. 3 STARS5) Carving the Little Guys ~ With just 31 pages this is more of a pamphlet than a book. The text is again the work of a single artist who's forte appears to be basic caricatures. Good photographs instruct the reader in the production of just a single, basic caricature (is the black thing under his nose a tongue or a moustache?). Overall, rather disappointing. 2 STARSSo there you have it, I hope that saves you the time I lost as well as the money I spent!

... you like to learn the basics, then quickly branch out into doing your own thing, or experimenting. If you are looking for "insert Tab A into Slot B" instructions for every Little Guy pictured on the cover, you may not like this.As other reviewers noted, the book is thin - only 31 pages. But the majority of that is taken up with detailed instructions for how to carve one Little Guy, complete with large, detailed pictures. Then there are several pages of information on how to modify that basic form into anything you want (with more good, clear pictures). That's what I love best about it! I've never been very good at doing the simpler, beginner pieces when learning a new hobby. I always want to jump ahead to something of my own design. It's a curse, and has caused me a lot of grief in the past, as sometimes I'm not ready, skill-wise, to do that, and I end up frustrated. But this book is set up perfectly for that. You learn the basics on the detailed project, then you can take off on your own, modifying and experimenting, with tips from the book. Will I screw up a lot of Little Guys before I start getting them the way I want them? Probably. But that's okay! It's part of the process of learning any new skill. And just to reiterate, it's not a total free-for-all - the basic instructions are very detailed and more than sufficient to get you on your way. I am a brand new carver with no past experience and no particularly inherent skill at it, but my first Little Guy turned out pretty darned good - not as good as the book's example, but way better than I expected - following those first detailed instructions.A note about wood, in case anyone is doing what I did. I saw this book on another website sold as a kit, with 9 blocks of basswood to carve the Little Guys. I only came here initially to read reviews on the book (as the other site didn't have any). I thought maybe those blocks of wood were specially selected to be the exact size you needed to carve Little Guys, and it might save me the trouble of finding some place to buy wood. But it was pricey ($20 for the kit, so about $11 just for the wood). In the end I decided to buy the book from Amazon and wait and see what the requirements were for wood. I'm glad I did. That kit was pointless, as the author recommends starting with blocks that are 1" x 1" by 2" - and none of the blocks in the kit were that size anyway. I got a bag of different size basswood blocks from my local Michael's Craft Store for about $5 or $6 and they are perfect for carving these guys. (They ranged from 1 x 1 1/2 to 1 x 2, and I did trim them to 1x1 using a bandsaw, but you could trim them with any small saw, or just carve the extra bits away, or just make your Little Guy a slightly different size). The author recommends starting with basswood because it's easy to carve (true!) but also says you can use anything carveable, and recommends experimenting with found wood - I love that concept, and not being told I HAVE TO buy such and such particular, expensive piece of something in order to do this. In theory, except for a good knife, you could carve a village full of Little Guys (and Gals) without spending another dime. That's my kind of hobby. So, to sum up, if you're okay with learning some very detailed basic instructions, then moving on to experimenting, this book couldn't be better. I can't wait to try all the ideas I have, and since they're adorably small and inexpensive to make, I can experiment to my heart's content without breaking the bank. I'm really, really glad I got this book, and have a feeling it will amuse me and keep me busy for a long time. (Little Guys are addicting!)

Maybe if you were just starting carving, there is not enough detail in this book.First, the brief section on honing is very inadequate. He could have included some polishing compounds and grit. There are also commercially available honing kits (see Amazon - Flexcut).Next, the safety section didn't even mention a carving glove for the hand not holding the knife. Not guarding your "off" hand is extremely dangerous. Again, there are some on Amazon. I have a problem getting the right fit on gloves, so I went to a wood working store so I could try them on.As far as a carving guide, there are no patterns, and he only shows how to do one character. You will find more and better instructions on YouTube.I was expecting more about how to carve figures, with some attention to eyes, mouth and the other hard parts.

Cucumber PicklesView larger Cucumber Pickles Pickled cucumbers, or simply “pickles,” are a quintessential fermented food. The first record of pickles comes from ancient Mesopotamia. Such diverse historical figures as Aristotle, Julius Caesar, Shakespeare, Amerigo Vespucci, and Thomas Jefferson are reported to have been fond of pickles. Indeed, Amerigo Vespucci, after whom America was named, was a pickle vendor before he became a world explorer. Pickles play a significant role in the food culture of many countries, from North America through Europe and into the Middle East. Preparation: 1. ) If your cucumbers are at all soft, if you bought them at the store, and/or if you suspect that they might have been picked a while ago, you can perk them up by soaking them in ice water. 2. ) Trim the blossom ends off your cucumbers. These ends contain enzymes that can contribute to “hollow pickle syndrome. ” 3. ) Combine the chlorine-free water and salt in the pitcher, and add any starter or vinegar, if using. 4. ) Place the seasonings and tannin providers at the bottom of the jar or crock, followed by the cucumbers. 5. ) Pour the brine into the crock. 6. ) Weight everything down in such a way that it stays submerged. 7. ) If needed, cover the top of the jar or crock with the cloth, and affix the cloth with the rubber band. 8. ) Store at cool room temperature. Every day after the second or third, pull out a pickle, cut off a piece with a clean knife, and taste it. When the pickles are pleasantly sour but still crunchy, they are done. Move them to a cool place (like the refrigerator) immediately. Yield: 3–4 pounds (1.5–2 kg), Prep time: 10 minutes, Total time: 3 days–2 weeks Equipment: Knife; Cutting board (wood is ideal); 1-gallon (4-L) pitcher; ½-gallon (2-L) mason jar, a Pickl-It, a Harsch crock, or a plain glazed (lead-free) ceramic crock; Something to hold the cucumbers under the brine, like a small clean plate or saucer that fits inside the jar or crock (if needed); Clean dishtowel or cloth to cover the top of the jar or crock along with a rubber band (if needed). Ingredients: 3 or 4 pounds (1.5 or 2 kg) small, thick-skinned cucumbers2 quarts (2 L) chlorine-free water1⁄2 cup (115 g) sea saltUp to 1 cup (250 ml) whey or 1 pint (475 ml) sauerkraut juice, or starter powder from an envelope (optional)Seasonings: generous amounts of whole garlic, bay leaf, etc. (optional)A few fresh grape or oak leaves, or a couple of black tea bags, for their tannins (optional)Red wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar, boiled and cooled to replace up to half of the water (optional)

I had purchased other Fermenting books before I bought this one. I should have started out with this one instead. Cover many types of foods, vegetable, milk meat etc. The best thing is that he explains what started to use and why. Also has some good recipes that don’t take much time but give good results. If you are starting with Fermentation, I would recommend this book. You might save money by not buying other books that really don’t explain what you need to know.

This is a fabulous book; I'm loving it so far! The author does a great job of taking the "scary" out of fermentation. He also does a great job offering non-mainstream information without being militant about food choices. (Not that anyone reading a book about fermentation is likely to disagree with him, but still...he's tactful, not pushy.)One of my favorite things about this book is the almost step-by-step development of it. Ferments are divided into several larger categories (like fermented vegetables vs. fermented dairy). Beyond that, though, the entire book is set up roughly from easiest or simplest to the most complicated, with chapters building on each other. That makes this a great book to work through in order (more-or-less), ferment by ferment, as a sort of textbook to learn the processes. I haven't gotten very far in terms of actually completing the recipes -- only to sauerkraut, which is first -- but that's the plan and I'm feeling more confident about learning with this book than others I've read.I would have liked to see a "what do I do when...?" section, because I did run into some issues while preparing my kraut. None of them were major, but I was thankful I had some people to ask, because I would otherwise have found myself a little "stuck." Most notably, he doesn't address (unless I missed it) how to get your food to stay under the surface of the liquid. As this is something I have consistently had difficulty with when making any preparations that involve leaving vegetable matter to sit submerged in fluid for a while, I doubt I'm the only beginner likely to run into this, and I wish he had tackled it.Still, I'm pretty excited about this book and it's beautiful step-by-step recipe photos, and would highly recommend it for beginners like me.

I am only on chapter 2 and although the information by the end of the book may be valuable, I felt compelled to inform potential buyers of one thing .... it is very wordy. I'm finding the book cumbersome to read because the author is very conversational and talks about making our own food and taking control "especially at a time in history when many of us feel at the mercy of events, governments, corporations, and industrial food producers." I'm more of a 'just the facts' type of person. I want to learn about fermenting, not sit by a fireside drinking wine and having a leisurely philosophical discussion about it. I have already ordered a different book hoping for information that gets to the point faster.

After spending the last couple of years making drinks that go fizz, it was time for me to turn my attention to foods that go fizz... in a good way.I already had a couple of fermentation books (Art of Fermentation, Cultured Food Life), but once I got this one it quickly became the only one I turned to. At any one time I usually have at least three of the recipes contained herein bubbling/festering away. (Currently Carolina slaw, crème fraîche and yogurt.)The pictures are clear, the explanations are thorough, and everything's shown and explained so well you can't wait to just do something - provided the ingredients are on-hand, of course. And most importantly the results are great! (Or in internet-speak, nomnomnom.)One of my dogs even liked this book - so much so that he took it off the bookshelf and consumed half the introduction while I was out one day. It's that good of a book that although the recipes are still all intact, I'm considering buying it again so I have a pristine copy to be able to leaf through and mull what to try next.

I just made my first jar of Sauerkraut and it was great. This is so amazing for two reasons.. one I never ever cook and two, I used to hate store bought sauerkraut. This is a well written easy read with great photos to help you though your first batches of fermentating stuff. lol. They gave me ideas on equipment (minimal but important to have the right stuff), then the recipes were drop dead simple and yet really really taste. I feel like a kitchen star! This book would make a great present for anyone interested in making their own Real food.

I checked this book out from the library and liked it so well that I bought myself a copy of it. It clearly explains how food fermentation works and includes recipes to follow. It gives you enough background information that you aren't just following the recipes, but are fully understanding how they work. I particularly like that it explains how you can adapt recipes to suit your own needs. Most cookbooks want you to use their recipes exactly, but this author encourages you to change them in ways that please you. The recipes are easy to follow and modify. They include full-color photographs of the steps so you can see what you should be doing instead of just reading about it. With it, I was able to make my own yogurt, strain it, and use the strained whey to start my own fermented vegetables. I am very happy with this book.

Amazon.com Review

Perhaps the most fun of a bushel of books about the "new" Las Vegas, 24/7 is as surreal and addictive as a hot game of blackjack at 4 a.m. In this first-person chronicle of a month in Las Vegas, Andrés Martinez whirls through casinos and hotels with his $50,000 book advance, taking notes on characters, nightclubs, and hotel lobbies between wild betting sprees at the blackjack table or roulette wheel. Part of what makes 24/7 enjoyable is the fact that Martinez is no down-and-out gambler, but a former lawyer with an Ivy League pedigree whose main vice seems to be an addiction to Diet Coke. He takes to his exploits with the intoxication of someone released from dull routine, without ever falling down on the job. As a result, he's never too delirious to note the weirdest details of this desert mirage. It's a city "where buildings themselves perform," lined with such features as a Jules Verne theme park, erupting volcanoes, and battling pirate ships. Early on, the author gets philosophical: "What type of city did we build in the middle of a desert, a metropolis with no reason, beyond our willpower and playful imagination, to exist?" Anyone who's ever asked themselves the same question will satisfy their curiosity with this entertaining, firsthand view of the fastest-growing city in America. --Maria Dolan

And Martinez displays a sly wit, observing, for example, that future archeologists will conclude that "Las Vegas was an important religious center." However, though he ends each section with a report on his ever-fluctuating "nest egg," and inserting reflections on Dostoyevski's The Gambler, Martinez doesn't elevate his notebook into narrative. He recounts the antic thrill of dropping $450 in new winnings on a gift for his wife, but never reveals enough to convey what risking his stake means to him. Indeed, though the author, returning to Vegas after his initial stint, ends up losing big, he concludes his book with a happy shrug, having "felt the exhilaration of truly letting go." His whimsicality makes one wonder about the source of his immunity toward ill fortune. (Nov.) Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

A very interesting concept wherein a writer secures a $50,000 dollar advance to gamble all over Las Vegas playing a fairly high roller role for a single month. Well written with interesting sidebars or interviews with various types of vegas residents. I think a lot of us could fantasize about doing exactly what this writer was actually able to pull off. I do recommend the book and enjoyed the writing style.

I have been reading the Wall Street Journal for years, and while it is chocked full of information, the writing tends to be bone dry. It's amazing how Martinez, a former staff writer for the Wall Street Journal writer, is able to combine facts with fun, and paint a compelling and factual view of the "New Las Vegas". The action moves seamlessly from resort to resort, and from game to game. Two memorable quotes:Martinez, speaking to a dealer early in his trip:"'How fascinating this work must be,' I said to the dealer, wearing my most earnest smile, 'to have a front seat at fortune's ampitheater, to see human nature in its rawest form, stripped of all pretense, to witness the ultimate agony and the ecastasy.'"Martinez, commenting on the gritty downtown Las Vegas:"Downtown is a subsistence economy, where uniformed cocktail waitresses play video poker over at Binion's Horseshoe while on break, pawnshops hover vulturelike down every dim-lit street, and prostitutes come cheap. You cannot spend an hour walking through downtown without coming away with a sense that gambling is a cannibalizing endeavor that will wear down and corrode those who persist at it. There are no swashbuckling pirates or pyramids to disguise that fact."The organization of chapters into different resorts keeps the action fresh, as does Martinez's $50,000 gambling binge.Overall, I found the Martinez approach more interesting than Pete Earley's Super Casino. Both were educational, but Martinez's was more fun.24/7 is an excellent read for those who are Vegas-bound.

24/7 is a great book to read as an introduction to the city of Las Vegas (not just the gambling life), and is an entertaining jaunt through Sin City by a novice gambler. Martinez is an engaging writer, one who is informative and humorously entertaining at the same time.My only problem with this book is that for a book on Las Vegas, there really didn't seem to be too many chances taken by the author. What gripped me about the book was the excerpt in the back describing how the author had just lost over $20,000, and fretting at how he was going to tell his wife and his publisher. In the end, that was the most gripping tale in the book as far as gambling went. Martinez ultimately left Vegas only down about 10% from what he brought with him. It seemed like an unsatisfying trip, one where he never really got off the pot, so to speak. Ultimately, the closing sequence where much of his losses occur seem almost to be a frantic attempt to lose his nest egg to at least close out his book with a floiurish. It feels rushed and forced and didn't really do the trick. However, gambling aside, the book is still entertaining and informative. Much is shared about the people living in Vegas, the history of the town, and the development of the casino culture. Those are the true strengths of the book.

I found this book to be such a fun read just because of the way the book was setup. Here you have a writer going to Las Vegas with the specific intent of gambling his publishers advance money. Having visited Las Vegas, I cannot imagine spending more than a week in the city. I loved the way the author details some interesting stories with people he meets along the way (a preacher working in the men's room at a strip club???? - only in Vegas) and the fact that he gets together with these people for some "follow ups" before he leaves.I wish the author would do a "24/7 - Part II" and go back to Vegas with some of the newer casinos that have opened since he wrote this book (for example- Mandalay Bay was still being built).Once I got started, I couldnt stop....

24/7 sounds like an adrenaline and hormone ride, but it actually isn't. Andres Martinez is a middle class, stable guy who is given $50,000 by a publisher and told to go to Las Vegas and gamble it up or down. What he makes in profit he gets to keep. I won't ruin the plot for you, but Martinez plays a great deal of baccarat and blackjack along with some slots and a single game of poker. As a narrator, he seems like a kind man whose decency, unfortunately, detracts from the story's value. Everything's pretty tame here, and for those of us who read books as a way to vicariously escape our own moderation, it's more bourgeois than ideal. Martinez is strongest when talking about his own childhood in Mexico or about The World Cup. He's weakest and annoying when talking politics. He appears to have all the usual biases of the mainstream press. Indeed, he views "libertarian" as a pejorative even though a careful study of his former country would prove to him the extent in which socialism impoverishes the masses. One problem that I should mention is that the book is now dated. Oh, it wouldn't be if it were written about any other city, but 1999, in Vegas years, was four decades ago. Many of his observations, such as those about the former mayor, have little application to the present. Much has changed since 2000 and the changes will continue ad infinitum. I do have to say though that the sections on baccarat were educational and very entertaining. It's a game of which most of us small timers know absolutely nothing. Another reason for my mild recommendation is that the role of casino host, such as the one he had at the Luxor, is really fleshed out. We see their tremendous dedication their clients here. The hosts, like the high stakes gaming areas, are another side to Vegas which most of us rarely see.

Rick Steves gets so much crap for being Mr. Everything in travel these days but I have to say his book on Italy is much more detailed and useful in comparison to the Lonely Planet edition. Get over his over-exposure and take advantage of the wealth of know-how he shares - at least for those planning to travel to Italy

A book with something for everyone. Provides information on transportation, remote areas to see, suggestion for avoiding long lines even where to find a laundry mat. This is a must have for people who are independent travelers longing for the best way to see and discover Italy.

My wife and I used this guide extensively while we were in Italy and it was invaluable. Well written, with just the right amount of detail and easy to use maps. Really enhanced the quality of our touring. Probably not the best for hotel recommendations, but those can be made via many online travel booking web sites.

I love Lonely Planet and their books. Their Italy book provided us with everything we needed for our two week trip to Italy from restaurant recommendations to what you need to do to prepare to travel abroad.

I purchased this book as a gift for my brother and his wife, who are going to Italy for their honeymoon. Although I haven’t read this one personally, I have a few other Lonely Planet travel books and find them very helpful, and often have off the beaten path recommendations! Would recommend these books to anyone planning to travel, but unsure of where to go!

This has really good information about transportation, lodging, meals, activities, festivals, local customs, and specifics about the cities by region along with a really big pull-out map of Rome in the very back. I'm taking a cruise so a lot of it didn't apply to me, but I still found it helpful. I wish it had more information about activities, like excursions, tours, tour operators, types of activities, etc. Can you imagine that this book doesn't mention anything about beaches, boating, fishing or diving and it's on the Mediterranean Ocean? It's about internal Italy. There is miniscule mention when it reviews Sardinia.

Filled with great insight. The only downside is that the print is small...

Comprehensive guide with everything you need to get around.
