Violet Stiel loves her Daddy. She knows many of us love him too. And now that he has died, she'd like two things:1. To keep him as alive as she can through memories and affectionate tribute2. For you to know the man she knew, and love him as she did. This book is not a biography of Ramis or his daughter. Rather, it's a memoir - a glimpse into each of their lives, following the thread of where those two lives intersected. It is the story of Violet's rare relationship with an uncommon man, and how he shaped her world and her heart. This is not the dramatic Biography of a Famous Man. It's not the Heartbreaking Memoir of a Dysfunctional Family. It's a love letter to Harold Ramis, from the person whose life he touched more deeply than any other, and invitation for you to see the man she saw. An invitation worth accepting.#EgonButNotForgotten

Warning: This book is near impossible to put down. Granted, this comes from a kid who was "Egon" every chance he got at recess back in the day but I'll tell you, this is one very well-written book. Violet pulls no punches and candidly discusses the successes and failures, big and small, in her life and her father's life. It becomes clear early on that there is no sugar-coating here, and it is against this backdrop of sincerity that the warm, compassionate, loving spirit of her father shines through. Too many books in this genre (about a legend who has passed on) treat the person in an almost god-like way. This one doesn't. Violet instead focuses on what made Harold Ramis human, giving us an unvarnished insight into what Egon was really like. Very well done.

This book thoroughly explores Violet Ramis Stiel's relationship with her father, legendary comedy actor, writer and director Harold Ramis. The focus remains squarely on that relationship, and we learn as much about the author as we do about her famous father. While film fans may be looking for more in-depth analysis of Ramis' process as a filmmaker, and more information about the making of his films than we get here, this book gives some fascinating insight into Ramis as a father and as a man. To me, that is much more interesting.

I was fortunate enough to have a copy of "Ghostbuster's Daughter" by Violet Ramis-Stiel delivered to me two days before it officially hit bookshelves (thank you, Amazon Prime!). I pre-ordered this as soon as I heard the news and as a fan of Harold Ramis's work, had been hotly anticipating the book. As soon as I got it, I had it finished within a day. (Yes, it was that good.)The title "Ghostbuster's Daughter" is kind of deceptive, because there really isn't a whole lot said about the comedy blockbuster or its sequel that Harold Ramis co-wrote and co-starred in with Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd. The chapters, for the most part, are titled after the many movies Harold wrote and/or directed, and are about the corresponding period in Violet's life when her dad was making these movies. If you buy this book expecting a detailed biography of Harold Ramis's life, you might be a little let down. This book is really more his daughter Violet's story, which was very compelling. Violet herself had an unconventional upbringing being the daughter of an unpredictable artist and a Renaissance man who would become one of the godfathers of modern comedy. Violet does not go into a lot of detail about either her mother or her stepmother, but they are not the focus of the book. Harold was his daughter's rock through her messy yet remarkable life. "Ghostbuster's Daughter" is a well-constructed memoir (released in time for Father's Day), not just of a famous filmmaker, but how Violet became a pretty well-adjusted woman as a result of some unorthodox parenting.Harold Ramis is often held up to god-like status by fans because of his success with films such as "Caddyshack," "Groundhog Day," and the aforementioned "Ghostbusters." For as much reverence as Violet holds her father in for what a patient, generous, kind person he was, she also writes that he was a regular person who was not without vices (this book is liberally sprinkled with pot usage!). Yet he strived to learn and grow into a better person, for his family and for himself. His influence definitely rubbed off on his daughter, who seems like an awesome person. While the ending is sad (Harold passed away in 2014 from complications of autoimmune vasculitus), Violet does not go into graphic detail about his final years which had to be incredibly difficult on her and her family. Violet Ramis-Stiel is fortunate to have had a special relationship with her father that most young girls lack growing up. You don't have to be a fan of "Ghostbusters" to enjoy this celebration of Harold Ramis's life and his daughter's journey into adulthood, and I hope to read more from Violet in the future.
