Definitely would recommend to younger girls and teens! But as a sophomore in college, I found that the material was a little beneath me. I kind of knew when I ordered the book, but being a longtime Carrie fan I just had to see what she came up with. Not to say that it doesn't contain many nuggets of wisdom. But I'm at the age where I've already come to accept many of the principles Carrie describes so it didn't feel as poignant. Although I did find myself nodding in agreement and totally laughing out loud at certain points, so I'm pleased. Also, I love the design of this book. Super cute :)

There comes a time when I'm reading one of Annie Hawes' books when I realize I'm only holding about half an inch's worth of pages in my right hand -- darn, I'm nearly at the end of the book. Has she written another one yet? Do I have to make do with other authors until her next book comes out?This book is a delectable series of impressions from a trip Ms. Hawes took in the early 90s to North Africa. I knew nothing about the region and found it as fascinating as she did. Her feeling for what is human-scale and the history of places and customs is mesmerizing. Her descriptions of food are always compelling to me.Then, as she is about to embark on a trip across the Sahara, we run out of pages. Aiee. Will there be another volume? What happened next? Just as we're getting settled in, the book ends. There's something about her writing that is satisfying in a unique way, her observations or anecdotes she chooses to share.I found her descriptions of Islamic customs to be fascinating and pertinent given the tidal wave of anti-Islamic media since 9/11/01. US media has certainly never featured any whiff of what Islam is or means, just a scary boogey-man type of entity which Israel would like the US to destroy IMHO. So ANY alternate view would be welcome. That it came from Annie Hawes based on a pre-9/11 trip she took elevates her descriptions and stories above propaganda. It's a fresh point of view for American readers.She writes of being treated as an "honorary man" since women don't travel by themselves in the region. That leads to some hysterical complications as things unwind, most notably her inadvertantly embarrassing a host who is reduced to his wit's end by her innocent behavior. There's a charm and humor throughout this and her other books that I can't say reminds me of any other writer.I can only hope that Annie Hawes will continue to write. This book is a joy. One of my favorite modern writers. Definitely worth buying and reading.

Having already enjoyed immensely, Annie Hawes' trilogy of books on her life in Italy, I had high expectations of this book and I was not disappointed. Annie writes with insight and depth of her travels through Northern Africa in the company of her two male travelling companions. She has a wonderful way of observing human nature, but not passing judgement on those with whom she meets during her travels. Her writing challenges the reader to ponder and draw their own conclusions on what she observes, but also takes us on a highly entertaining journey to places that the vast majority of her readers, will never venture.

This authors previous books, especially Extra Virgin and Ripe for the Picking ,where the characters were so much fun to spend time with, that this was a disappointment, as was her third in the series "Journey to the South..

I love Annie Hawes' books. Reading her stuff is like hanging out with her. And she brilliantly teaches us history, geography, and culture in a completely beguiling way.

Not quite up to par with Annie Hawes other books. To me it had more background information than needed....or, didn't balance enough "story" with the information provided. I felt bogged down in her "information". She's a good writer and that was probably the saving factor for me. I've thoroughly apprecieted and enjoyed her previous books....Extra Virgin, Ripe for the Picking, and Journey to the South. From a bookworm)

I found the book interesting to see the view points of the people in the Sahara - especially before 9-11 happened. Didn't find it as charming a book as the ones written about Italy.

Annie Hawes exhibits her usual insight into human nature in this memoir of her trip to North Africa. The culture and inhabitants of the towns and villages that she visited are described with humor and empathy. I enjoyed this book very much and hope she has one in the works about the second half of her trip.

Barry Eichengreen, an economics professor at UC-Berkeley, is a scholar of the first order on The Great Depression. His “Golden Fetters” on how the operation of the gold standard during the inter-war years was a significant cause of The Great Depression is a classic. He argues in the Keynesian tradition on what the crisis managers of 2008 learned, perhaps too well, the lessons of 1929-33. Thus readers who prefer the views of James Grant’s “Forgotten Depression…” will differ greatly with this history.The analogues between the 1920’s and 30’s with the 2000’s are many. Here are only a few highlighted by Eichengreen:• Bernie Madoff was the equivalent of Charles Ponzi.• The Euro of today works the way the gold standard of the 20’s worked.• The bailout of the Dawes Bank (Central Republic Trust) was similar to the Bear Stearns bailout.• Letting Lehman fail was analogous to the moral hazard issue associated with allowing the Ford controlled Guardian Group of Banks to fail in 1933.• There were real estate booms in both eras.The lessons our modern day policy makers learned were to flood the system with liquidity, bailout the banks, engage in fiscal stimulus policies, avoid protectionism and avoid debacles like the London Economic Conference of 1933 through international cooperation. However, unlike the 1930s the problem in the system was not really in the banks, but rather in the shadow banking system that grew up in the 1990’s and reached full adulthood in the 2000’s.Perhaps more important instead of four years of grinding lower in the 1930’s the economy began to recover after two years and most governments and central banks began to pull back on stimulus policies which in Eichengreen’s opinion is the reason for the slow growth the global economy has experienced since 2010. Further by preventing another Great Depression the impetus to fully reform the financial system waned and we ended up with a watered down version of financial reform with Dodd-Frank. Eichengreen is a reformer in the Polanyi tradition. Unfortunately as Keynes contemporaneously noted reform is the enemy of recovery. Reform took place in the 1930’s because the old order collapsed, but as many have noted the New Deal reforms delayed recovery. Even Eichengreen concedes that National Industrial Recovery Act of 1933 was an economic disaster.In reading Eichengreen’s book one has to sympathize with the policy makers of the early Great Depression. They were operating in real time with inadequate information, much as Bernanke et al were doing in 2008. Eichengreen is sympathetic to New York Fed President George Harrison’s “direct pressure” approach to the stock market boom which he characterizes as an early version of “macro-prudential” policies. Unfortunately “macro-prudential” policies have yet to be tested and I suspect they might have failed in the 2000’s in halting the sup-prime mortgage boom. Why? The policy makers would have been accused of racism by preventing Blacks and Latinos from buying homes.I have a few factual quibbles with the book. He understates the role of Hoover Treasury Secretary Ogden Mills in being the true author of Roosevelt’s early banking reforms; he fails to note the importance of the fiscal drag or tax on labor, depending on your point of view, of the introduction of Social Security taxes in 1936 without benefits being paid out until 1939. Remember at the time social security was not included in the federal budget. Lastly he sometimes confuses being long a credit default swap with being short the swap.All told Eichengreen has written an excellent book, especially The Great Depression portion. However, because it is probably too long and towards the end he pontificates too much on the Europe of the past years, which is too recent for real history, I give the book four stars not five.

I held off writing this review until I had read the book thoroughly, an essential precaution I'm pretty sure several of the other reviewers have not taken. It's particularly important here because Eichengreen is making a very rich and nuanced case that cannot be distilled into a simple theoretically pure thesis. If you don't read it all, you're going to miss something important.I have read many other books and articles about the Great Depression and the Great Recession, but I nevertheless found much that was new and illuminating in Eichengreen's treatment here. I've recently re-read his earlier Golden Fetters: The Gold Standard and the Great Depression, 1919-1939 (Nber Series on Long-Term Factors in Economic Development) which I feel is the best single stand-alone economic analysis of the Great Depression. (No, I'm not a committed true believer in "real business cycle" theories, or in liquidationism for that matter; if you are you probably won't like this book very well.) I'm not about to throw away my copy of Golden Fetters, which goes more deeply into some important details, but if you can only read one book on either the Great Depression or the Great Recession then Hall of Mirrors is the choice.The great strength of the book lies in Eichengreen's masterful use of the comparative method of analysis, for he shows that considering both cycles in the same frame yields insights not to be gained from examining either alone. His method permits him to explain many features of each that would otherwise be quite puzzling.Eichengreen is an economic historian rather than a theorist. There isn't an equation in the book; he has deliberately avoided abstract theorizing both to appeal to a broader audience and to assure a more complete and comprehensive perspective. I have no doubt that what he is saying will stimulate both theoretical and econometric work, some perhaps from his own pen. But this is the right place to start.Early in the book, on page 9, Eichengreen says, "Where Keynes relied mainly on narrative methods, his followers used mathematics to verify their intuitions. Eventually those mathematics took on a life of their own. Latter-day academics embraced models of representative, rational, forward-looking agents in part for their tractability, in part for their elegance. In models of rational agents efficiently maximizing everything, little can go wrong unless government makes it go wrong." Which is a polite way of saying that economists of this stripe take "government" as a word of art, referring not to any actual institution but to the sum of "irrational" forces that they cannot model, or choose not to. If you are one such I suggest not reading this book, which will only bewilder and annoy you.But if you are genuinely interested in understanding the Great Depression and Great Recession and have no fixed preconceived notions then I thoroughly recommend this book.

Professor Eichengreen has done a masterful job comparing the Great Depression and the most recent financial crisis in both the United States and in Europe. He clearly describes the historic origins of both events along with the often confused (and sometimes counterproductive) official responses. His conclusion that the modest success of the most recent interventions prevented deeper thinking and more profound reforms rings true for me.

I have read several books on both the Great Depression and the Great Recession and this counts as one of the best for both and certainly the best for making comparisons, of which, as the author explains there are many. The book is written in a clear and easily accessible style. I particularly enjoyed the author's description of how his research on the Great Recession changed his view on the Great Depression (greater understanding for the policy uncertainty the decision makers were under). In classic Eichengreen style, the author asks whether an explanation also work in another time period or another country, which helps refine the argument. I learned a lot of new things in this book and I am looking forward to re-reading it soon.

Bought this for my seven year old grandson who is crazy about soccer. He loved it. He took it to bed each night for some bedtime reading. It was full of information, and he especially enjoyed reading about players who were stars before he was born. It's appropriate for fans of all ages.

We use Michelin maps whenever we go to Europe, and there's no doubt in my mind that this one has every possible road in Sicily included in it. That's the good news.The bad news is that the Sicilians are not the best at posting road signs to help you track your course, so your map needs to pull double duty as both travel planner and neolithic GPS. Fortunately, the Michelin map is so detailed that you can pretty much solve any "where the hell are we?" problem in relatively short order.PS: GO to Sicily! Incredible! Avoid driving in Palermo unless you have a deathwish, but make Selinunte and Siracusa must-see stops on your journey. And that that Michelin map!

With two friends we have been planning a trip to Sicily done by car and with a starting point in Rome. Let me tell you, the rather large map of Sicily was always displayed on my dining room table and often consulted. Not very practical to consult it in a car while driving, but totally great to consult before the trip and during the trip at the end of each day in one's hotel room. Michelin makes the best maps! I also bought Michelin Italy Road Atlas to be consulted in the car while driving to our various destinations.A very good duo to have. Hope this helps. Ciao!

Believe the other reviews that say this map is big! I bought it to tape it to a wall as we planned our trip. It is perfect for a wall or a large dining room table. High quality map. I can't imagine trying to use it while driving, but I will bring it with me for use in hotels as we journey. Definitely worth the price.

Too small to see. Couldn’t use it. Google maps worked all over from Catania to Agrigento to Noto to Ortigia and back to Catania airport. Did not need the map. Helped at least with overview for planning purposes.

My wife already performs that chore whenever we switch seats, driver to passenger. I snarl at her when she can't scan a map and "read" our route at a glance. She snarls at me when I can't keep track of the little green hamster crawling along its narrow tube on the iPad or 'Droid.Maps have always been an art form as much as a geopolitical tool. Yes, these Michelin maps are almost wall-size, and yes, it can be awkward to fold and refold them while riding "shotgun" in a cinquecento. But they tell you so much! Even when they are only road-network lines, they're loaded with imagery. This map of Sicily, for instance, reveals much of the economy and demography of the island in a single scan. It's an empty overpopulated place! The 'autostrada' skims along the north coast line from Rosolini in the southeast to Trapani in the northwest, and slashes across the interior from Palermo to Catania, but it oddly shuns many of the larger secondary cities which the squiggly old roads connect. Ecco! Urbanzation, flight from the farms to the slums, for anyone to see. Look what huge patches of the island have only the third-level narrow two-lane roads, spiderwebbing the still oppressive latifundia. And yes, this map shows footpaths -- thin broken lines -- to be the most universal infrastructure of Sicily; there are indeed villages in the interior that show no other access routes than footpaths! Are they still inhabited? How can I resist finding out! And here's a mystery! Straight south of Cefalú, a north-coastal city where I'm planning to rent a villa for a month, there's a cluster of towns large enough to rate 'pink' blotches in the Michelin legend -- Gangi, Blufi, Bompietro and a dozen more -- all tightly linked by one-lane roads and footpaths without even a third-level highway to any of them. If the Sicily of Lampedusa's "Leopardo" still exists, it has to be there!A guidebook is a heavy chunk of outdated misinformation. Maps, of course, get out of date also, but less quickly. I know, I know, the future belongs to touch-screen electronics. I'm being disingenuous, deliberately, about google maps and such. I use them too. But I sincerely hope that maps such as the Michelin series are not doomed to obsolescence and extinction.

Never thought I would have enjoyed Sicily as much as I did and this map was a great aid. GPS and Garmin type products are great, but a good map makes the adventure and memories.

Fantastic detail but it is HUGE and somewhat flimsy. Totally impractical for use on a trip. We have ours taped to the wall, which has been helpful for planning our upcoming trip.
