But he has also brought in other significant occurrences that took place within the memories of many of us who are still around. Towards the book's end he takes readers through potentially disastrous fates that mankind could face in future. Yet there is always the suggestion that life in one form or another has always survived, even proliferated after terrible happenings.The book is a simple history of our violent universe leading up to the formation of Earth and damaging events affecting it prior to the appearance of life here. At this point I'll add that is aimed at the general reader of non-fiction. It is written with a touch of humor, meaning that it isn't a dry-as-dust scientific tome. I'll also mention that readers should notice the fact that were it not for some of these massive disasters having taken place, we humans would not be here. Mr. Berman calls attention to the high probability of the final, yet-to-occur catastrophe that will consume Earth and everything on it some billions of years in future. I refer to final solar expansion.Personally I appreciated the author's giving me a good synopsis of the types of nuclear electricity generators, how they function, and what happened to cause the accidents at (1), Three-Mile-Island, (2), Chernobyl and (3), Fukushima. As a result society has turned thumbs down on fine, non-polluting nuclear energy.I recommend because it contains much easy and interesting information - far more than I can cover here and still produce a bearable review.

This book is excellent for someone who either already has limited experience knitting or who has a friend or teacher who can answer really basic (as in "stupid") questions. If you don't fit into either of these categories, there is no way you will "teach yourself visually knitting" just with this book.There are too many gaps. For example, there is the assumption that you instinctively know which is the "right" side and which is the "wrong" side, among other basic bits of knowledge. This may or may not be important, but when the instructions say do this on the right side and that on the wrong side, you'd like to know before proceeding. Being told that the "wrong" side is the side you don't see when you're wearing it is not helpful because, right now, you're not wearing it. Being shown what the right side looks (or should look) like and what the wrong side looks like, would be. (When you are really beginning, the anatomy of a stitch is not exactly obvious. You're just following a sequence of instructions and not sure why or how it all fits in at the end).I also didn't find the "mistakes" section as clear as I would have liked: what is a "dropped" stitch? How did it happen? What can I do to prevent it? At a critical point such as a mistake (where you're close to panicking that you've just blown the whole project!) a few more photographs in the sequence of steps would have made an already tense situation a little less tense.Assuming that you are truly gifted and that you make it to the end of your project and now you now want to get the knitting off the needle and around your neck, you have to either make sense of the description (which is clear but intimidating) or get a magnifying glass to see exactly where the needles go in relation to the yarn in the small and distant illustration. (A macro lens for closeups would have been a nice touch throughout the book, but particularly here).Having said this from a real beginners point of view, the book appears to be an excellent resource for somewhat more confident knitters or knitters who want to expand beyond the basics. It has a section that shows swatches created using many types of stitches that, I'm sure, will come in handy someday. There is a lot of good information that I couldn't find elsewhere (such as get ready to start a new ball of yarn when you're getting close to having 4 times the length of yarn as the width of your project.)I gave it only 3 stars, not because it's a bad book--it's not--but because the content is not consistent with the implied level of the title and I find that misleading. This is not a book that gives you a great sense of security when you're starting out.If you haven't ever picked up a knitting needle, I would suggest Nici McNally's DVD The Complete Beginner's Guide to Knitting (also available at Amazon). That one IS for complete beginners, you see what you have to do and what it should look like when you do it (close up and slowly), and it tells you what mistakes you're likely to make when you're starting and how to prevent or correct them. It doesn't cover too much ground but it does cover what you need to know NOW.

I loved this full version so much that I bought the Quick Tips version for taking along with me when I'm on the go. The full sized book works for so many questions, techniques and definitions. This style just speaks to me in a way that works for the way I'm learning to knit, which is Continental. Not that many books really tell you both the English and Continental versions of the knit and purl stitch, but this book does.This book covers a lot of topics that I'd have to pay a lot of money to learn if I had to pay a person at my local yarn shop to teach me. AND the book is available 24 hours a day whenever I need it. I have several Teach Yourself Visually and Visual Quick Tip books and I'm very happy with them on a wide range of topics. You can't go wrong if you need more than just words sometimes to help you grasp a subject.

I am a beginner knitter and found this book to be helpful with the basics but I found it lacks trouble shooting for some of the basic mistakes.. One resource I am not able to locate is a step-by-step book (with pictures) or more preferably a DVD that demonstrate how to fix the most simplest mistakes a beginner makes. For instance, when a stitch would accidentally slip off while binding off or during a combination of knit & pearl in a project. Here is an opportunity for someone to create a DVD "Beginners Mishap's for Knitters". I am satisfied with this book for it does provide good references to many areas that a knitter will need to know. It explains in depth the differences of needles, yarn, many accessories, right & left handed knitting, providing examples with both. I would recommend it to others.

When I start any new hobby or project, I always research (a lot). I just try to hit the learning curve with avengence rather than flub around for years. I bought Nici McNally's DVD to actually learn to knit as lessons are not available in my area. I was super pleased with it as a way to get going and knit your first few projects. She even includes patterns and some finishing tips and instuction on fixing mistakes. You can get rolling with that alone. But then, I bought several knitting reference books. I think you will find, once you branch out from basics, you are going to come upon terms and instructions that leave you with the deer in the headlights look! Of all the books I purchased, this one is (in my opinon) the best reference. The diagrams are the most clear that I have seen. That's not to say I don't Google YouTube for a short video occasionally to see a technique, but the information is quite good. The book covers a lot of useful material, in addition to being colorful and inspiring. There may be a better book out there for you "go-to encyclopedia" but I haven't seen it (yet?) If I had to just keep one book for my knitting reference, it would definitely be this one. And by the way, one of the wonderful things is the section on modifiable patterns for hats and things. If you can't find the exact pattern you want and are brave, even as a beginner, you will find you can do a bit of your own original design work. I especially loved that section!

I knitted a lot when I was younger but then got busy with other projects and it had been quite awhile before I returned to this pass time. I had forgot a lot over the years and found this volume to be just the perfect refresher, even helped me correct a few of my old bad habits. I think this would be great for beginners as well. I like that it shows alternative methods, so if one doesn't work well for you another might be easier and more efficient. It is hard to show movement in still pictures so this might not be quiet as efficient as having someone demonstrate for you or watching a video on U-tube, but it is certainly the next best thing and covers a great deal of territory including not just the basics but information about tools and how to utilize them, how to read patterns, variations of stitches and knit patterns and yarn weights to form projects that are uniquely your own. Plus it even offers some simple patterns to get you started.

About the Author

Hilary earned a B.A. in Sociology with a minor in Art History at Hardwick College in 1991. She is an avid traveler with a passion for Latin American culture. In ‘93she moved to Costa Rica to work as a volunteer English teacher with WorldTeach, and later directed an environmental education program at the Rain Forest Aerial Tram. Over the course of seven years, she immersed herself in the culture of Costa Rica as an educator and honed her photography skills. She began her photography career in news and travel for the Tico Times of Costa Rica. At 30, she moved to NYC to study at the International Center of Photography. As a two-time recipient of the ICP/Johnson & Johnson Fellowship, Hilary completed assignments for J & J’s corporate social responsibility at the U.S.-Mexico border, then India and Vietnam. This led to subsequent assignments for international NGOs in the U.S., Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and tsunami-affected regions. Some of her clients include: Covenant House, Habitat for Humanity, Heifer International, MAP International, UN Women, UNHCR and The Clinton Foundation. Her photographs are in a permanent exhibit at Covenant House Headquarters in New York City as a result of a project documenting the plight and rehabilitation of street children in México & Central America. Frequent collaborations with NGOs have allowed Hilary to strengthen her passion as a socially concerned photographer while sensitively being a voice for the marginalized. She has exhibited in Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala and the U.S. In 2001, Hilary assisted master photographer courses for the Maine Photo Workshops’ Havana program. Compelled to share photography with local youth, she developed a photo library and directed the Havana Youth Photo course in 2003. She has also taught in after-school programs in New York City and teaches ESL to new immigrants. Hilary’s international work and experiences in Cuba provided the opportunity to lead people-to-people cultural and photography trips for various travel groups on the island during the last six years.

I received an Advanced Reader's Copy of the book, but then I didn't have time to read before it was published and I had already pre-ordered it (because Cidney is fantastic, and time travel books are my favorites), so that's the copy I actually read and am reviewing. And the review is all mine.One of my favorite things about Cidney's writing is all the research that she does to be able to add lots of amazing details into the story. I especially liked the trip to ancient Rome, the unexpected consequences of fixing a leak, and the anguish DaVinci feels over not knowing/understanding this timeline's version of herself. Least favorite parts include the progression from attraction/irritation, like, and then love between DaVinci and Quintus -- which happened a bit too fast for me -- and Littlewood's unexpected visitor. Also, the antagonists' unresolved story arcs, although slightly disappointing make me excited and hopeful for the continuation of this series into a 4th book. 4.5 stars overall.

I don't remember how I discovered the books by this author, I can only say that I have enjoyed reading all of them immensely. I don't want to spoil the story. Her books are enjoyable, entertaining, and through provoking. Is the story line possible? Why not. Suspend your sense of disbelief and be entertained when reading not just this books, but all books by author. It's great to be shown the door into a different world, that has it's roots in this world. A wonderful way to become engrossed in a new world. Enjoy a vacation from your reality.

For one I can't believe the price of these wonderful books. I can't say enough about how enjoyable they were. She did such a wonderful job of developing the characters I just fell in love with them all which made it a must to read the stories of each one. I'm going to be on the lookout for the next one in the series. I could not put it down until all three were read.

YOUNG ADULT ALERT !!! I very much enjoyed the story but I was put off by the speech patterns of the young people in the story. If you are a young adult, and don't mind the way your peers speak, you will love these stories. Maybe this can be remedied if the series continues into the protagonists' mid- to late twenties??? That having been said, the time travel in these stories is unique and the different locales in which the characters appear is well-researched.

Yes, it was that good. As always, Ms. Swanson tells a compelling and riveting story. In this, the third book in the series, we find many twists and turns, and few unanswered questions, leaving the door open for book four, which I am very much looking forward to.

Awesome read!

This is the third book in the series, all three are very good and I enjoyed them as standalone books, but they were better in sequence. DaVinci story is the most unique and has an intriguing twist.

Phenomenal book. Dr. Bevins truly puts the importance of Common Prayer into perspective. A must have for Anglicans, and a great resource for all Christians who want to develop a better understanding of the importance of liturgical worship, both as an historical fact and a spiritual reality.

This claims to be a guide to the Book of Common Prayer. It sort of is, but it's more of an abridged version of the BCP with intros to each chapter. This book does not instruct on how to use actual BCP, which is what I was looking for and expecting from the title of this book.

This was a helpful look at Common Prayer & in particular the Book of Common Prayer. Coming from a tradition the does not necessarily use resources such as the Book of Common Prayer I wanted to learn more about it. This served to further intrigue me & I will be picking up a Book of Common Prayer as an aid & resource in my prayer life & in my seeking to shepherd the hearts of those I serve.

As one who comes from a non liturgical background I find this book to be very helpful in shaping my prayer life. The history of the Book of Common Prayer is also very interesting.

Not really a "field guide" because it doesn't explain what the BKP actually is, in practical terms...actually, it barely addresses BCP...but this book does put the BCP in some sort of context and it does address prayer in general. It is intelligent, moving, and substantial ..

I like this and I feel that when I was in a Parish teaching children and adults for Confirmation class this would have been good to give to my students. Too bad it had to be written by a member of one of the newer members of yhe Anglocan Communion.

Given its coverage of over 300 rivers, this book is rich in information, economically written, and an ambitious undertaking by the author. In a subject area where many authors deal with the most common (and combative) fishing opportunities in Alaska only, Limeres and Pederson go far beyond that, including many remote and lesser-known areas as well. The format was not only efficient, but useful, making it easy to identify the fish timing and transportation information for each system. If there were areas of improvement, it would be in updating the flight and lodging information (there are many more such areas than indicated in this guide), providing additional outfitting contacts (i.e., for rafts/motors etc.), rating rough-camp opportunity of the systems (his category "no developed facilities" isn't as constructive as it could be), and re-checking the fish timing (silver salmon runs are generally longer than Limeres would indicate). Other than that, the authors are only slightly guilty of over-doing warnings about bears and weather, and recommending more fly patterns than one would ever bring to a given situation. Overall, this book is so comprehensive and well-written that I recommend you buy this book, and only this book -- other books offer much less information (and much more mis-information). I will definitely buy the next edition. What a bargain.

This was truly the best guide I have ever found on fishing Alaska. I learned from every section I read from this book (and not just because it was the first guide I bought.) Few guides have approached this book for content and design.If you can find a copy of this book, get it. There does seem to be some good news for 2005. I have heard a few people mention that Limeres' is planning on releasing a new version of this book this year which should be completely rewritten.

Well written, entertaining and easy reading! This sturdy paperback reference is encyclopedic in the thoroughness with which it covers Alaskan fishing. The authors have broken Alaska down into logical regions and present the fishing opportunities for each. This "bush" manual conveys both a sense of sportsmanship and conservation.

A thorough book with a good appendix which allows the reader to find info about streams which are mentioned in other text such as the Milepost. This is not as much of a how to fish but rather where to fish book. Gives good info about fishing conditions, types of fish available and camping etc in the vacinity. Very good resource.
