About the Author

David S. Moore is Shanti S. Gupta Distinguished Professor of Statistics, Emeritus, at Purdue University and was 1998 president of the American Statistical Association. He received his A.B. from Princeton and his Ph.D. from Cornell, both in mathematics. He has written many research papers in statistical theory and served on the editorial boards of several major journals. Professor Moore is an elected fellow of the American Statistical Association and of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and an elected member of the International Statistical Institute. He has served as program director for statistics and probability at the National Science Foundation. In recent years, Professor Moore has devoted his attention to the teaching of statistics. He was the content developer for the Annenberg/Corporation for Public Broadcasting college-level telecourse Against All Odds: Inside Statistics and for the series of video modules Statistics: Decisions through Data, intended to aid the teaching of statistics in schools. He is the author of influential articles on statistics education and of several leading texts. Professor Moore has served as president of the International Association for Statistical Education and has received the Mathematical Association of America s national award for distinguished college or university teaching of mathematics. George P. McCabe is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Science and a Professor of Statistics at Purdue University. In 1966, he received a B.S. degree in mathematics from Providence College, and in 1970 a Ph.D. in mathematical statistics from Columbia University. His entire professional career has been spent at Purdue with sabbaticals at Princeton, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization in Melbourne (Australia); the University of Berne (Switzerland); the National Institute of Standards and Technology (Boulder, Colorado); and the National University of Ireland in Galway. Professor McCabe is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of the American Statistical Association; he was 1998 Chair of its section on Statistical Consulting. From 2008 to 2010, he served on the Institute of Medicine Committee on Nutrition Standards for the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs. He has served on the editorial boards of several statistics journals, has consulted with many major corporations, and has testified as an expert witness on the use of statistics. Professor McCabe s research has focused on applications of statistics. Much of his recent work has been on problems of nutrition, including nutrient requirements, calcium metabolism, and bone health. He is author or coauthor of more than 160 publications in many different journals.Bruce A. Craig is Professor of Statistics and Director of the Statistical Consulting Service at Purdue University. He received his B.S. in mathematics and economics from Washington University in St. Louis and his PhD in statistics from the University of Wisconsin Madison. He is an active member of the American Statistical Association and was chair of its section on Statistical Consulting in 2009. He also is an active member of the Eastern North American Region of the International Biometrics Society and aws elected by the voting membership to the Regional Committee from 2003 to 2006. Professor Craig has served on the editorial board of several statistical journals and has been a member of several data and safety monitoring boards, including Purdue's IRB. Professor Craig's research interests focus on the development of novel statistical methodology to address research questions in the life sciences. Areas of current interest are protein structure determination, diagnostic testing, and animal abundance estimation. In 2005, he was named Purdue University Faculty Scholar."

Like other reviewers have mentioned, this book is not good at explaining statistical concepts. The writing style is strange and includes errors (I'm not sure when it was decided 100,000 requires a comma in English, but 1,000 does not). Other errors include repeating sentences in problems or answers being incorrect. A character in one problem is named Emily, but ends up as Julie by the end of the problem. The writing style is also somewhat inappropriate and unprofessional. One problem gives an example of studying the effect of calcium on young girls, so an experiment is created where investigators spike the punch at a summer camp for girls. Another problem asks you to explain why it would be "stupid" to not sell more than 10 of something.The problems at the end of the sections are the most frustrating part. Oftentimes, questions will refer to the previous problem, a problem within the section, or a problem from an entirely different section just to have you answer the same questions as those problems. One problem even referred to a problem in the previous section which referred to a previous problem in that section. Talk about problem-ception, just combine the problems into one. Other problems require you to source data from the internet or from some other unknown source (How do I make a scatterplot without the necessary data?! The book doesn't even tell me where to get it from!).The answers to the odd numbered problems are given in the back of the book, at least partially. Some parts of answers are mysteriously left out and skipped. Some answers are just flat out incorrect. For example, one question asks what blood type children will have if the parents have B and O alleles. Obviously, it would be B or O blood type, but the back of the book says it should be A or O. If you plan on teaching yourself statistics with this book, you will be left scratching your head wondering if your math is incorrect or if the book is incorrect.I'm not sure what teachers and professors see in this book, but it is simply not good. It seems as if the authors merely pumped this book out to make a quick buck, put little thought or care into the material, and stamped it as the "up to date edition". Perhaps it is the only Intro to Statistics book on the market? Anyway, I will be returning this book.

The initial access code was expired/invalid. Reading other reviews this does not appear to be an isolated event. After a few emails and phone calls Amazon is allowing me to keep the book with the expired code until the new book arrives. Book is not well written, explanations and examples can be difficult to follow. Not helpful at all with integrating the use of graphing calculator. If you need the access code for your course work I would recommend ordering a used book at a much cheaper price and purchasing the access code directly from the Macmillan Higher Education website.

The kindle version is really difficult to understand. Its only useful for a bit of starting information to get a feel for the concepts, but their example calculations and equations are really hard to follow or understand. Also, there does not seem to be a very strong "flow" with this book as in calculus text books I've read. In calculus text books its easy to back track each problem and see how exactly an equation is used, but I don't get that ease of use AT ALL with this book. Also, there are typos with a few of the equations themselves. x̄ was written as something else and I spend a good bit of time trying to find out what it meant. For the amount of money I spent, and with all the other math textbooks I have read, I expected much more from the book. I barely use it at all and depend almost entirely on my statistics notes, so why did I even bother with buying this book?

Book was not only costly, but shipped very slow and came with NO ACCESS CODE that was guaranteed. I am not able to do my assignments now that I have put off waiting for the book with it's access.The book itself is very difficult to understand and requires you to read over it all several times. It's poorly written with little examples and explanation that you're forced to look online to better help yourself to understand which is annoying.

It's an amazing introductory statistics book with great details and straightforward explanations. I used the 6th edition for my stats class at grad school, and now I bought this as a reference book for my research work.I bought it from the seller green_leaves. Amazingly, it was eligible for same day delivery. Ordered it last night and got delivered this noon! It's in a brand new condition with the valid online activation code, and it's much cheaper than the default Amazon fulfilled price! Love it!

Book does not do well in explaining statistical concepts. There are tons of example questions in the book, however none of them have answers or how to actually solve the problems associated with them.

Would not recommend. Paid almost $20 for next day shipping but pacakage arrived a day late. This is a loose leaf book which in itself is not a big deal to me. However, the pages are hole punched so close to the edge that merely turning a page, no matter how carefully, tears the punched holes 8 times out of 10. I had to buy reinforcement label stickers from Office Depot and apply them to countless pages just to be able to turn them without tearing. It’s frustrating to spend $150 + on a purchase and receive something that can’t even hold up to extremely light use.

I only rented this book, but have to say that I really liked it's explanations and the simplification. Didn't use the CD/software so can't comment on that. Was a little intimidated as it's a heavy book and looks a bit "scary" but I found the content to be great.
