About the Author
Jock is the New York Times best-selling British artist best known for his comics work with writer Andy Diggle on DC/Vertigo's The Losers, the award-winning Batman: The Black Mirror, and Wytches with writer Scott Snyder. Jock has also produced key art, concept design, and promotional imagery for films including Iron Man 3, The Dark Knight Trilogy,Dredd, Star Wars: Episode VIII, and the Oscar-winning Ex Machina. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he now lives and works in Devon, England. Will Dennis was an editor at Vertigo/DC Entertainment for more than fifteen years, specializing in genre fiction comics and graphic novels. His award-winning titles including 100 Bullets, Y: The Last Man, Scalped, DMZ, Joker, Batman, and many more. He lives in Brooklyn, New York, where he freelance edits comics and books. Peter Berg is an acclaimed writer, director, producer, and actor. His directorial film credits include Hancock, The Kingdom, Deepwater Horizon, Lone Survivor, and Friday Night Lights, which he also developed into a hugely successful TV series. He lives and works in Los Angeles. Jim Lee, a world-renowned comic book artist, writer, editor, and publisher, is the co-publisher of DC Entertainment (DCE) alongside Dan DiDio. I'm surprised that Insight Editions' the publisher for this book. Looks like they are venturing into comic artbooks.The Art of Jock is given the large hardcover coffee table book treatment. There are 160 pages and there's even an author, Will Dennis, assigned.Mark Simpson, aka Jock, is a terrific comic artist. I love his style, the textural look and energy he gives to cover, the wonderful use of negative space and the way he designs his pages and covers. Below's the list of his commercial artworks that are featured in the book- The Losers- Batman: The Black Mirror- Green Arrow: Year One- Savage Wolverine- Daredevil- Wytches- 2000 AD- Judge DreddIn addition to all that, there are also the beautiful posters created for the popular pop culture company Mondo. I love Mondo's posters and Jock's interpretation for the selected movies. There are Shaun of the Dead, The Thing, Pan's Labyrinth, Cannibal Holocaust and more. He has also created concept art for films such as Dredd, Ex Machina, Battleship. I read that he has contributed art for Star Wars Episode VIII but those were not included.Highly recommend to fans of Jock and comic art.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Bought this as a gift for my boyfriend who is really into comic books and figurines. He just loves it! This book is very interactive and really cool to look at. He keeps coming back to it!
Great art from an awesome artist. Love the transparencies that show the color superstition from the black ink work. There’s only a few of these but they are so interesting to look at and learn from. I noticed Jock uses a lot of halftone patterns in his work also.
This book is a wonderful companion, full of dynamic art inspiration and many details about the life and work of Jock. Easily able to page through again and again. Would definitely recommend for anyone looking to be inspired, Jock's work is amazing.
