About the Author
Grobar is James Moor’s first book. Born in Crawley, West Sussex, and brought up an Arsenal fan, he now lives in Belgrade where he works in the British Embassy. I was highly disappointed in this book, it certainly can't match "A Season in Verona" and doesn't even come close to "Fever Pitch". It seems like a half formed idea that could have been so much better if the author would have went deeper into the history of the team, its rivalry with Red Star, or much of the ultras conflict. Instead, especially when it comes to the fans the author is often just reporting hearsay from his "connected" friends or from online message boards, while he has a very judgmental attitude toward the most passionate fans and tut tutting their behavior (while at times also acknowledging that they are able to create atmosphere that can't be found in England). The author tries to be passionate about Partizan but it just seems his heart isn't in it. If he would have spent more time in Belgrade and more time following Partizan, maybe it could have been more, but the end result is a quick read that at times is entertaining, but more often than not leaves something to be desired.
A nice educational book about the most intense atmosphere in the world but somehow cant find passion.The underlying problem is the authors cold and naive approach to political tense debates. As to be mad or angry of the crowd singing about Kosovo. While not being able to grasp the passion and love to be able to understand some chants, banners.Also missing is a more detailed description of the atmosphere and the fans in regular. All in all James made a good book but lacks the fire/passion to question political intrigues, which is a major part of Serbian supporters.
