Review

“The book is a super story of [the fall of Eben Emael], including what lead up to it and the results of the experience. It gave the German paratroop corps a feeling of near invincibility, a feeling that faded after the near debacle at Crete, but not completely as these men, while never doing a large scale drop again, were quite successful in other smaller actions during the war. It makes for a riveting story of an event for which we all know the outcome, but is told here in the sort of detail we have not often had. A great read and one that I can most highly recommend.” ―Scott Van Aken, Modeling Madness (March 2013)“Chris McNab is an impressive author, who demonstrates a clear mastery of the subject. In addition, the book is very well-written, maintaining its cohesion despite the shifting scenes of action. It is a rousing story of 'fortune favors the bold,' and is highly recommended.” ―Coast Defense Journal (Vol 27, Issue 2)“Blow-by-blow discussions of tactics and the operation's movements make this a solid addition to any military strategy holding.” ―The Midwest Book Review (May 2013)

While an extremely important part of the German invasion of the West in the 1940 campaign, the conquest of the fortress Eben Emael is easily overlooked for several reasons. The duration and number of participants of Germans vs. Allied forces were both very small. Only a few hundred men on either side and a short, quick victory by the Germans was easily over looked in the grand scheme of the blitzkrieg on the West. A relatively short, almost bloodless battle fought by shock troops against a static defense, an embarrassment to the amount of money poured into a fort that was over run in less than 24 hours are things to be swept under the rug.Author McNab does an excellent job detailing both sides strengths and weakness, the use of technology, stealth and surprise that allowed a force of less than 100 men over come 10x their number in an 'impregnable' fort. The maps, photos, all help the reader understand how this quick victory was achieved. It's not that Eben Emael was a useless fort, but rather the manner in which it was attacked that led to German success. Once this lynch pin of the Belgium fell, the rest was sure to follow, allowing an equally quick and equally shocking defeat of France.Well illustrated, concisely documented, this is an excellent choice to read about one of the most daring and successful aspects of the German Blitzkrieg during the western campaign of 1940. Certainly worthy study of special forces, highly trained to engage superior numbers and win decisive victories in a short period of time. The Fortress of Eben Emael is open to the public, is next on my list of things to see in Europe in 2018. A most helpful book in understanding the battle.

This is the greatest book that I have read in the Raid series. It looks into the defenders and the special equipment that the German soldiers used. The artwork is amazing.(I can't stop looking at the paintings) The author does a good job telling it as a story, with all actions being told in real time. The reader feels as if they are in the battle themselves.

Although the British might have coined the term "Commando", it was Germany that actually executed the first successful type of "commando raid" of World War II with the elite Fallschirmjagers! Concise history and well illustrated.

Excellent and informative. Anyone interested in airborne history needs to read this book. Well written with a good blend of technical and first person information.

Awesome book!

Super!

I was a history major at college, and now wonder why this story was never told. Because it showed how great the German military was at that time?? Eben Emael was such a tough fortress. Would another country beside Belgium have been able to defend it? This is a great read, well written. Anyone interested in WW2 should not miss it

The Osprey series is a fine way to delve into details of WWII operations that the history texts sailed past. The series also looks into details of weapons systems that are still interesting. This short book tells how the Germans overtook the foolish and wishful thinking of the Belgians who never wanted to fight. The fortress was mostly paid for by the French who were stunned when this generosity was repaid by Belgian government announcing their neutrality. Of course, the French were also fools who counted on the Maginot Line for their protection.(The Germans simply went around it). Of course, the real victims of these decisions were the lower ranks of soldiers who were expected to fight and die while the arrogant morons at the top stayed above it all.

I am so glad this was a free read. I am amazed at the number of positive reviews for this book and even more amazed that the publishers and public liked it enough to make a series of nine books. I won't be reading anything else by this author.Sabre Brown is a juvenile court attorney who is assigned to advocate for nine-year-old Alexis, who is removed from her father's care along with her half-brother and eventually their infant sibling (I can't even remember whether it was a boy or girl). Alexis's father Gaylord (yes, really) and his pregnant girlfriend Penny had argued over her drug use. She fell and hit her head on a table but accused him, and that's how the kids were put into child protection. The writing style is stilted and reminds me of a high school essay. The author tries to develop the characters, but she just makes them more mundane. The dialog is completely unrealistic, and her attempt to "show, don't tell" just made the writing more tedious. Sabre's relationship with her best friend Bob is just weird. The author makes a point of saying they were never romantically involved, but friends with no romantic history don't call each other "honey" ALL THE TIME. I know it was a plot element for a time when Sabre excuses someone else for calling a friend "honey" because she calls Bob "honey," but that doesn't make it not weird. One more example...Bob greets Sabre one morning with "How's my pre-pubescent nugget of love and carnality this morning?" And she smiles and responds with "Hi, honey. You sure know how to change a girl's mood." "Pre-pubescent nugget of love"?!? So is Bob a closet pedophile? And Sabre smiles?!? These are juvenile court attorneys! I would think that these types of comments would NEVER come out of their mouths.Sabre also doesn't appear to have any common sense. When things are moved in her office and in her home, she sees suspicious vehicles, hears rustling in the bushes outside her office, she is warned by Bob and by a detective to be careful, it is suggested that she stay somewhere else, does she heed ANY warnings? Does she think any of these are red flags? No...she thinks she's being paranoid, and she never calls the police about anything suspicious.***Some spoilers below***Here are the things we learn about the characters because they're repeated over and over and over:-- Sabre keeps a checklist in a notebook her brother gave her when she was 5 or 6 of things she'd like to do. She reads this list every single morning. The first thing on her list is to marry Victor Spanoli. We learn all about Victor but not because he's an actual character in the story. He's just on her list because she wanted to marry him when she was 5 or 6 and she's read it on her list and thinks about it every single day. Who does that?!?--Sabre clears her morning calendar every day. No...really?--Sabre carries stacks of files to and from work, tosses them into her trunk (how do they not get thrown all over the place?) and she leaves them on a shelf by security. Get a briefcase like a normal person. The author actually talked about the lack of a briefcase just as I was thinking, "why doesn't she have a briefcase?" She doesn't want to carry the heavy files from courtroom to courtroom, so she puts her stack of files on a window ledge by the security guy and goes back between cases to get the files she needs. Ummm...potential issues with confidentiality perhaps?--She has lunch with Bob almost every day. So tell us about it once and then let it go. We don't need to hear them talk about lunch every single day.--Bob smokes a lot. The author constantly points out that Bob lit a cigarette, Bob finished a cigarette, Bob put out a cigarette. And why did we have to suffer through all of the details of his smoking? So that at the end of the book when Sabre gets shot and Bob thinks she's going to die, he can pray to God and promise to quit smoking if she survives. (This also plays into the weird relationship/non-relationship they have going.)--Crazy Carla calls Sabre's office sometimes dozens of times a day. At first, I thought Carla was a former client since they mention Sabre is the only one who can calm her down by talking about butterflies and green pastures. Then we find out that Carla is the former girlfriend of Sabre's missing brother Ron, and she's been hospitalized since Ron's disappearance five years ago. Well of course Sabre is the only one who can calm her down. She's the only one who knows Carla!--This leads us back to Bob, the best friend, who apparently knows nothing about her missing brother. In five years, she's never told Bob about her brother's disappearance? My best friend pretty much knows everything about every part of my life. That's why she's my best friend. How is it possible that Sabre has never told Bob about her brother before when it pretty much defines her life outside of work and she carries a picture of him around with her?--Finally, Dr. Steele, who is conveniently a dead ringer for Sabre's missing brother and is a new doctor at the hospital where Carla is being treated. The author creates the Dr. Steele story line so that when Ron wants to visit Sabre in the hospital after she's shot, he can do so by posing as Dr. Steele so he doesn't expose himself since he's in Witness Protection after testifying against some thugs in Atlanta. Just a little too convenient, if you ask me. And at one point, Dr. Steele asks Sabre to call him Corbin, indicating that Dr. Steele is his father. I do not know a single doctor who would ever ask a patient to call him by his first name. There's more - oh, so much more - that is wrong with this book, but I have already wasted too much time on it. I strongly suggest you skip this one, and I certainly won't be reading the rest of the series.

I'm torn about this book. I read the negative reviews and many of them are absolutely right. The dialogue is often poor and ranges from overdetailed to unrealistic. I skimmed over much of it because it became tiresome to read after a while. The ending wraps up way too neatly, and since this is now a book series, much of it could be stretched out over future books instead of all at once at the end of this one. There's a subplot with a crazy relative that seems fairly irrelevant until the end, and even then seems like it really contrived what happens to her by the end. However, the overall plot of the novel kept me engaged, and I enjoyed the protagonist enough that I would continue to read this series.

Remember that old American Touristor ad where the gorilla beats up the suitcase? In this book the suitcase could have been the main character Sabre.Sabre (really...Sabre...nicknamed Sobs) is a family court attorney who specializes in representing minor children in court proceedings. Sabre is appointed to represent Alexis, a precocious (aren't they always precocious??) 10-year old girl, and her 4-year old and newborn half-brothers. Alexis's mother disappeared 5 years ago under mysterious circumstances - which no one seems to have really investigated. Alexis's step mother is a drug addict. Alexis's father is a too-perfect Southern gentleman who is (obviously) hiding something.Sabre is being stalked by someone...who might be her brother or might be someone evil from her past or might be someone evil from her present. They do nasty things like loosen the light bulb on her back door and take a photo from her office. Oh, and they slide a bat (mammal not wooden) through her mail slot. And the bat attacks her...totally out of character for bats.Sabre is kidnapped, falls down a mountain while trying to escape, gets two concussions, is the only one who can comfort a psychotic ex-girlfriend of her brother, solves a 5-year old kidnapping, solves the disappearance and murder of Alexis's OTHER half-sister, brings down a crime syndicate in three cities, is shot and wounded in a police stand-off, has her condo burn down, gets WITSEC to break witness protection for a family meeting...shall I go on?Oh...and Sabre has missing a brother who walked out of her life 5 years ago. No trace of him...so she looks for him around every corner, smells his cologne everywhere, and faints when she spots someone who looks like him. His doppelganger plays a crucial plot point in the book.I get exhausted even thinking about this character. The writing was a little uneven. The dialogue was often stilted. The frequent change in point of view set my head spinning. The plot was a little implausible at some points. WAY too many coincidences and revelations. Every time a crucial piece of information was needed - BAM - it surfaced in some weird, awkward way.The other reviewers are right - the whole lawyer/court thing was more background noise than actually contributing to the plot. The only purpose it really seemed to serve was throwing Sabre together with Alexis (the 10-year old in danger). There are better legal thrillers out there. There are better mystery/suspense authors.Kudos to the author for finishing and publishing. Keep working on your plots and publish again.

After reading Regina Calcaterra's outstanding best seller, "Etched in Sand," I immediately pre-ordered "Girl Unbroken," co-authored by Regina and her little sister, Rosie. The weeks before it arrived were almost unbearable. We had grown to love little Rosie who alsosuffered unbelievable abuse by their mother and we couldn't wait to read Rosie's story or even if she lived through it. This whole familyhas endeared themselves to their readers with their indomitable spirit, their perseverance, their fighting for each other, their true grit, notonly at the cruel hands of their mother but from state-operated child-protective systems that miserably failed them. They not onlysurvived but thrived as they grew older, still holding each other close and forming a protective, loving shield around them from an often cruel and uncaring world. As other reviewers have suggested, if you possibly can, read "Etched in Sand" first but if not, read them in any orderbut please read them. I adore these women and wish them every good thing that comes their way. I pray for them that their stories will continue to bless those who are now being abused, and encourage these children to establish their faith in a loving God, even though some of His children have so badly treated them.

I heard Rosie and Regina speak last night in Huntington, NY. The audience also got to meet Norm, Cherie, and Camille. The fact that five adults could survive such abuse and neglect and still turn out to be amazing people is a heartening message in today's world. Rosie's love for her siblings (especially Gi) shines though every page. I applaud these two women for having the courage to make their story known, as I'm sure that it was not an easy decision. As an educator, I am mindful of the impact that a kind word, gesture or smile can have to a child in need. These children survived Cookie's abuse because of the "good touches" of people who were not in their biological family. Rosie's sense of deep appreciation (seeing a normal family interact and sharing their meal) reminds us that we must never miss a chance to enrich the world of a child. Thank God Rosie and Regina had enough of these people in their lives. And our world is truly blessed to have these brave women come forth to tell a story that will have a major ripple effect in our country.

This is a book that needs to be read. More importantly, it needed to be written. There needs to be a special place in Heaven for those who have endured the physical and emotional torture described here. There also needs to be a special place in Hell for the abusers. Unfortunately, we accept the concept of Heaven and Hell as a matter of faith and hope, and we are too "civilized" to give the abusers what they so richly deserve for the pain they have inflicted on children. Fortunately, Cookie is dead and will inflict no more harm. I do wish that Clyde would have been named. So much for my rant.Rosie is s superhero! So are her sisters and brother. Their children will know love, affection, and most importantly, the stability to have lives filled with room to grow. The cycle of abuse has ended for the five wonderful siblings.I will certainly read the first book in this series and I urge everyone to read them. The writing is wonderful, and the pages fly by, so ingrossed is the reader. I read the book twice in three days. This is in my top ten!

Not sure where to begin so I will thank the authors for telling their stories. I literally ordered this book the moment I finished Etched in Sand. I enjoyed reading the book in first person from Rosie’s point of view. This gave the book a more genuine feel and helped separate the reader from tho other book. Some of this book was really hard to read because of the emotional toll that it had on the author. I found myself having to take a break from reading it. The book is moving and made me call my siblings to tell them thanks for the the relationships the we have developed. The book puts the big things in perspective and makes you laugh at the little things. The book will make you a more well rounded, empathetic person and if it doesn’t strike you in your emotional core than no book will. I would love to read a book by the brother Norm. Hey norm you reading this WRITE a book people would love to read it or sell your art for people would buy it. I would like to get the male perspective.

I highly recommend this book and advise the reader to first check out Regina Cacaterra's story in "Etched in Sand". Then you should download this for Kindle for only $1.99 to read about little Rosie's experiences once Regina and her older half sister leave home. Both books are outstanding and do detail the stories of horrendous abuse to five children at the hands of many different people. I was hesitant to read either at first due to not enjoying digesting stories of child abuse but these to books are plain spoken and necessary. RECOMMENDED.

After reading etched in sand i just needed to know what happened. To Rosie and Norm. Unfortunately. For Rosie she had a miserable mother. Along with the mothers trash for boyfriend'. I raised. Four. Children on Long Island and couldn't. Believe this horror. Story. My kids even went to the same high school . it is sad that. the foster care system is so deplorable. And not trustworthy . kids need to be protected.and the system failed them

Good read with 2 adventurous guys nothaving a clue what lay ahead. They canmark this trip off their bucket list!

Great read with interesting and colorful commentary that keeps the reader engaged. Through the last page, I wanted to reading more. Ready to hear about the next modern day adventure from this writer.

Enjoyed everything about this book. Randy is a great storyteller!

I received a copy to facilitate my review.Talk about courage, these men, Randy Denmon and Dean Lewis, have it. I would never attempt to do what they did. He and a friend took an electric car, a Tesla S and drove it from Louisiana to the Panama Canal. What terrified me were the very things they had to worry about. A lot of these countries have drug lords. They also had to worry about to deal with policemen who did things their own way. For me the scariest thing was not knowing where they were going to be able to get electric to power their car. They took all kinds of plugs and extension cords. The Tesla sits real low to the ground. This was also a problem for them. They were not always driving on real smooth roads. There were treacherous mountain roads. There were roads full of potholes, bumps, and other problems like volcanoes. The book, for all of the issues they faced is very upbeat due to Randy’s attitude/sense of humor. As much as I loved the book and knew things had to turn out okay, since they made it back to write the book, I worried for them and their safety the entire time. This was definitely different from what I usually read. That is probably why I enjoyed it so much. I could live through their trip without having to do the physical traveling, from the safety of my own home.

In my younger years I considered myself the adventurous sort but there is NO WAY I would have undertaken a journey of this magnitude. This is what happens when a guy who hasn't taken a "real" vacation in over five years gets a wild idea and finds a friend willing to ride along. As far as the writing goes, Randy is no Bert Levy but he does add some humor into this dangerous adventure. There are many fascinating historical facts presented along the way, along with some political opinion.Because I know he lived to write about it, some of the edge has been taken off. I kept waiting for a few more Top Gear type moments. I can imagine readers and friends waiting breathlessly for daily reports as this daring duo attacked unknown territory.

Throughout the work I had a growing suspicion that this trip wasnt as ad lib as portrayed. I strongly suspect Tesla underwrote the adventure but there is no evidence for that claim. The author’s narrative provides the reader with an interesting travel guide for 3000 miles of country most of us know little about. Randy and Dan’s adventure at times seems to be extremely wreckless and risky. I have a sense, however, that Randy had much more knowledge of the region and the people than he divulges. Few people crave adventure to the extent that Randy and Dean did and it is even more rare to read a story like this that isn’t interspersed with left wing comments. If you love big government you may want to spend 231 pages reading something else.

Not my kind of book. Hard to relate to having a Tesla.Taking pointless risks always strikes me as dumb and reading about them is not enjoyable. There is nothing enjoyable about the constant listing of crimes against humans. There is almost as much focus on the horrors done recently to people in each area they drive to, as there is with finding power plugs. It is no surprise that finding the right power is a constant problem. Combining that known, with the violence and lawlessness of the area, their decision to travel with an all electric car is just dumb..Their survival had nothing to do with their smarts or ability. It was pure luck. Yet the book seeps with a macho bravado tone. They seem to feel as if they accomplished something.

Good message in the story. Nice illustrations and appropriately written for beginning readers

My son just turned 2 and this is hands down his favorite night time book. We read it about 6 times over before bed, along with many others, but he always insists we read the "Alfie cookie book first." This book has actually helped my son (unintentionally) with using manners and saying"please", "thank you", along with "may I please?" He says it every time he needs something now and anytime we hand him anything. My husband laughed and said just keep buying books off of Amazon they're working:)

May I Please Have a Cookie? was perfect for my first grader to read with me. She just started to read vowel teams and long vowels. For reading level, I suggest this for the second half of first grade to second grade.

This is one of five books recommended to motivate preschoolers to read. It worked like a charm for my three kids; with very different personalities.

My soon-to-be 4 year old son is very picky when it comes to pretty much everything, clothes, cartoons, books, people, etc...before ordering this book I debated for a few days thinking he won't care for it but because of the reviews and price I ordered it, and he loved it. I read it to him 2 nights in a row and on the 3rd night he was pretty much reading it to me. Short and easy to memorize for kids, good for their memory, and also the actual content is very nice and teaches manners in a short fun story...now my boy loves Alfie and wants a little crocodile just like that. Order the book, it's a good one!

My 21 month old daughter loves books. I have a bunch of books and I recently ordered about 30 picture books for her age. May I Please Have a Cookie is now one of her favorite books. I know all children are different, but at least for my child this book is very enjoyable. I'm not sure what it is about the book, but it works. She enjoys smelling the cookies and pretending to eat the cookies and pretending to cry. She is also saying please now along with the book. I'm sure your child will love this book too. Some other recommendations based on her favorites are: Hop on Pop, The Very Busy Spider and Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

I really liked this book and actually continue to use the verbiage in the book with my daughter to remind her a better way to ask for something other than just demanding what she wants. The book is comical but has a good message and is written in a way that kids pay attention and can relate it back to themselves in a real life setting. The graphics are great too!

Ours arrived yesterday and we've read it six times already! On the first read, our son (almost 4 yrs) started giggling through the story and we read it twice more. Early this morning he had the book in his hand asking that it be read - this was at 5.30am, so we've done that thrice again. He's possessive over this book and won't let his older brother near it lol. The book is wonderfully illustrated and the story fun while gives nice lesson in manners. Get this one, the book is enchanting to little ones.

Nice easy read that teaches a kids if he just asks nicely for a cookies he could have one. Easy level F reader

#175,199 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I can't write a book review, because this is not actually a book. What clearly happened was that the author hung out in Palm Beach, drinking a lot of free liquor, thrilled with himself for meeting so many rich and/or well known personages and getting so many freebies because he was an author writing a book about Palm Beach, and hearing so much gossip. Then when his heavily liquored up "research" phase was done, he thought, why bother actually sorting through this material and turning it into a coherent book? Why don't I just send my spiral pad notebook with my scribbled notes to the publisher and tell them it's the manuscript?

I am not sure if it was because I downloaded it onto my kindle or whether he had a very poor editor. It's content is engaging, but having been a reader for many years, I find the lack of proper spelling, grammar and punctuation to be a little distracting. Since Donald is running for president, I find the information in this book to be quite interesting.

The book was an easy read in that respect it was well written. It flowed well. However, I could not help but to think repeated throughout the book how the author harks on anti-semitism in Palm Beach by the upper class. For example, there is more than enough chapters about how the country clubs exclude Jews, over and over. I am not anti semitic, nor do I support anti semitic views and practices but I think the author mentions this way too much in his book. There is prejudice everywhere but what is so appealing in being a member of "members only" establishment is that it does exclude most. There are more pics of author with the so-called "rich and famous" than the rich and famous themselves! The book, I feel does give some insight into the lives of the inabitants of Palm Beach but not really into the lives of the original inhabitants, the "old guard". The people he interviews all seem to be poseurs trying to fit in and be a part of the "old guard" and even if theydo float on the "fringes" of "society" they don't really seem to be an insider or a real member. His sources are restaurant managers, real estate brokers, waitresses at hotel bars - how many of the old money-ed Palm Beachers would have these types of occupation? I just question how accurately these sources know the real workings of the truly wealthy, old money-ed Palm Beachers since they are not one themselves. All in all, pleasant read but take the information with a grainof salt.

As a recent retiree with snow-bird residence in a small co-op in PB, this was an interesting book to read, especially the parts featuring presidential candidate Trump. The best part of Palm Beach is its cleanliness, safety and scenery. The worst part is the bigotry inherent in the old guard. This book gives a good behind the scenes view of the pros and cons of PB.

Reading about the lives and lifestyle of Palm Beach residents is rich enough to give you indigestion. An amazing display of characters set amid an incredible tropical environment.

This book delves into the lives of the rich society people in Palm Beach. A few of the people I had heard of, and the author managed to get many of them to open up and reveal many of their feelings and peccadilloes. Interesting stories, including some about Donald Trump.

The book is essentially a long gossip magazine about how rich people live. Some parts of it are funny. Many of the people described are so shallow that it is hard to believe this book is non-fiction.

Basically a series of anecdotes. Like reading someone's diary. The interesting anecdotes were that Marjorie Merriweather Post liked her gold bath room fixtures because gold is much easier to clean, that one of Bobby Kennedy's kids OD'd in room 107 of the Brazilian Court Hotel, and that the Kennedy estate was falling in and had no A/C when the family sold it. Of course, Donald Trump weighs in with his genius for self promotion. I guess one could have used it for a guide to the hot bars and restaurants in the late 90's when the book was written. But the book is sadly lacking in insights and history of how Palm Beach became such a center for superficiality and messed up values. About the only insigths he offers is that super rich are often unhappy, and their children could care less when they die. Don't bother!
