The losses range from the trivial (a glove left in an airport terminal) to the tragic (a husband killed in Vietnam). In fact, as Nye points out in her splendid introduction, one reason why we fuss so much about petty losses is because we cannot bear to face the inevitable larger ones that can never be redeemed or reclaimed. This is a large collection of 140 poets, some well known (including William Stafford and Lucille Clifton), many published here for the first time, several in translation. Different poems will grab individual readers, depending on where they are now. The full-page portraits, mostly of teens, are never literal illustrations; whether posed or candid, they make you imagine their stories. The poets' voices are so intensely personal that you just have to turn to the biographical notes at the back after you have read each poem. They speak of failure, of being a "loser," of language (one bilingual poem is about what gets lost, not in translation, but between the happening of love or pain and its coming into words). Bought this for my mother who doesn't ever "understand" poetry. I read the entire thing as soon as I peeked in it. I cried. I laughed. I thought of friends and family and I thought of myself. Very relatable for ANYONE and none is over your head if not used to reading poetry. Will stay on my bookshelf. Ordered my mother another copy. Lol

A very fine poet. I had thought I'd be reading a whole book of Naomi Shihab Nye's poetry. Instead, she curated this collection. A worthy effort including poetry from around the world, relative to Loss.

I read this book in 9th grade and the poems resonated so deeply with me that I had certain lines in my head for years. I finally bought the book over 10 years later when I needed the comfort of words again to help me with a difficult loss. Will always be one of my favorite books.

Everyone can relate to at least one of the poems in this book. The author takes a common thread (loss) and puts it between the cover of a very well compiled book. This is a wonderful book to have in your collection!

Instead, it's more of an introductory to intermediate discussion of the given economic topic. It's great in that respect, and will likely serve as a good refresher for the CFA exam, but don't expect actual advice specific to making financial decisions based on the economic environment.

This is a terribly written book. It is difficult to understand and seems to cover the results of a process before it defines the process! It made passing my Global Managerial Econ grad class very difficult. I highly recommend instructors make another choice if they want their students to learn.

Concise, well written and a great refresher from grad school. I would highly recommend this book to help with a review of various economic topics.

It is for people who have always derailed my language classes asking why speakers of other languages don't say things exactly the same way we do in English. The book explains why you should study a different language, that your mouth has to make new sounds, and letters will have different sounds. Common sense but some people need this explained to them.There is also a section on relative and root words for those learning Latin and Germanic languages.The book is dated. The audio has a slight echo or hollow sound. The narrator mentions USSR. Since the book is at least 25 years old, modern learning aides are not mentioned such as podcasts, online tutors, and language forums. The author also promotes making flashcards with English on one side and the target language on the other. I recommend using Quizlet or Anki to make flashcards and putting the target language on one side and a photo on the other, thereby eliminating English altogether. The website towerofbablefish dot com describes how to learn a foreign language without using English. I also recommend the youtube video Polyglot Sentence Method by Glossika.One thing I did learn from the book is that FSI (Foreign Service Institute) offers graded readers in addition to their language courses. Just search FSI Language and whatever language you are interested in. FSI resources are now public domain and free.

I'm on my last stage of fluency of a language foreign to me and Fuller's CDs were extremely helpful in helping me plot out my final hurdle.As for resources, I just downloaded all the FREE, public domain Spanish Language courses by the Foreign Service Institute. These programs include AUDIO that have been remastered from cassette tapes to MP3s easily played on my computer. It was only because I listened to Fuller's tape that I learned about this incredibly rich resource. This is just one of a plethora of resources and ideas and tips he shares. The CD program is chockfull that I'll have to listen to it many times over the course of my language immersion because there is so much that is valuable to implement. There are very few references like this and I'd read a lot of what is out there before I found this. All in all the narrator gives some good tips. But at the same time its nothing new. Nothing you can't find on your own, on the web, in the newsgroups, or by talking with other students of language.There's a little too much reference to specific languages as opposed to language learning theory, what is possible, time tables for learning, etc..Its a little long winded at times and not as usefull as I hoped but I'm not going to criticize it too much. There isn't much like this out there. Barry Farber's book is supposed to be good but I haven't read it and can't compare it to this.All in all this is OK but not very useful if you've been studying a language for some time (months). It'd probably be good if you were just starting and didn't know how to begin.

This book does a good job at explaining what it takes to learn another language, but it doesn't go into enought depth on any of the points. A lot of time is spent explaining how different foreign words are related to English, and that is helpful, but there are too many examples. He also explains gramatical points of certain languages (mostly Indo-European), but he sticks to the same four or five, that readers don't get a larger feel for other languages out there. I know he isn't an expert on all languages, but with just a little research, the book could have had much more information.

Wow. There's really not much here. Aside from the recommendation for FSI (Foreign Service Institute) material and graded readers, none of the information goes beyond common sense.

I was hoping for a little more, but it does explain the project very well and is aimed at complete beginners. Lots of so called beginner books either never really get anywhere or start at level that's beyond beginner. It's a hard line to draw when you're writing about an advanced subject that requires knowledge of several areas.

great book - takes you from zero to a project, step by step. a bit technical in the language, so it requires some "translation" to work through with younger children (I'm going through it with my 7 year old). But it is very thorough, and is a great starter book. I'd recommend getting the kit from Solarbotics to go with it as well (link for kit is in the book).
