Last Hope Island: Britain, Occupied Europe, and the Brotherhood That Helped Turn the Tide of War, by Lynne Olson

Review

“Last Hope Island is a book to be welcomed, both for the past it recovers and also, quite simply, for being such a pleasant tome to read. . . . Certain of these refugee groups have had their stories told before . . . but Olson’s book is the first to weave this all together. . . . It’s a well-written and well-illustrated book, and deeply researched.”—The Washington Post  “In Last Hope Island [Lynne Olson] argues an arresting new thesis: that the people of occupied Europe and the expatriate leaders did far more for their own liberation than historians and the public alike recognize. . . . The scale of the organization she describes is breathtaking.”—The New York Times Book Review   “A brisk and compelling portrait of wartime Britain.”—The Wall Street Journal “[A] pointed volume . . . [Olson] tells a great story and has a fine eye for character.”—The Boston Globe“Spellbinding . . . [a] masterful account of England in World War II . . . [Olson] brings both a journalist’s eye and a novelist’s command of character and setting to this subject. . . . For American readers inclined to begin their World War II reading after U.S. entry into the conflict, Last Hope Island opens a fascinating trove of stories, characters and facts. . . . Olson’s book, ten years in the making, not only helps illuminate the past but also serves as an insightful backdrop for today’s discussion of the future of twenty-first-century European alliances.”—BookPage, “Top Pick”“A rip-roaring saga of hairbreadth escape, espionage, and resistance during World War II, Lynne Olson’s Last Hope Island salvages the forgotten stories of a collection of heroic souls from seven countries overrun by Hitler who find refuge in Churchill’s London and then seek payback in ways large and small. In thrilling fashion, Olson shows us that hell hath no fury like a small country scorned.”—Erik Larson, New York Times bestselling author of Dead Wake “Lynne Olson is a master storyteller, and she brings her great gifts to this riveting narrative of the resistance to Hitler’s war machine. You will be thrilled and moved—and enraged, saddened, and shocked—by the courage and steadfastness, human waste and stupidity, carelessness and nobility, of an epic struggle. Last Hope Island is a smashing good tale.”—Evan Thomas, New York Times bestselling author of Being Nixon “In a series of compelling books in recent years, Lynne Olson has established herself as an authoritative and entertaining chronicler of perhaps the largest single event in human history—the Second World War. Now comes Last Hope Island, a powerful and surprising account of how figures from Nazi-occupied Europe found Great Britain an essential shield and sword in the struggle against Hitler. This is a wonderful work of history, told in Olson’s trademark style.”—Jon Meacham, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of American Lion “You wouldn’t think that there would still be untold tales about World War II, but Lynne Olson, a master of that period of history, has found some. Not only does she narrate them with her usual verve, but her book reminds us how much we unthinkingly assume that it was the United States and Britain alone who defeated the Nazis in Western Europe. Last Hope Island is a valuable, and immensely readable, corrective.”—Adam Hochschild, New York Times bestselling author of King Leopold’s Ghost“This is a history book that reads like the best thrillers. . . . Olson offers a fascinating view of the war and its aftermath, less from a military than from a high-level civilian perspective. . . . The many individuals are finely drawn, major developments are well covered, and the book provides an unusual and very insightful angle on the war.”—Booklist (starred review)

Lynn Olson is an American historian who has written several bestselling books on the Second World War era. I have personally read her booksThose Angry Days, Citizens of London and Troublesome Young Men. This new work is an exciting account of the importance of Great Britain to allied nations who had been conquered by the evil Nazis. Charl;es DeGaulle directed efforts to free France from his London quarters while rulers like Queen Wilhelmina of Holland King Haakon of Norway broadcast over the BBC to their captive peoples on the continent. From England came spy missions directed by M16 and SOE into captive Europe. Many of the agents sent abroad died as did the brave people of occupied Europe who provided food, shelter and hope to them. Brave Europeans guided downed fliers and stranded soldiers to neutral France. The resistance helped provide for the Allied invasion of June 6, 1944 by covert actions against the German army. We see how important scientists were rescued by British operatives who assured their participation in the breaking of the Enigma Code used by the Germans. Many rescued scientists also took part in planning for the nuclear bombs used against Japan. This is an exciting book dealing with all the cloak and dagger spy activity more fascinating and scary than anything conjured up by a fiction author.I found it especially moving to hear of the hunger and suffering of the captive people of Europe in Holland, France, Belgium, Poland and Czechoslovakia. The contribution of Polish airmen during the Battle of Britain in 1940 was inspiring. Olson includes many stories about real life men and women who were real heroes in the long and bloody fight against Fascism. I was surprised to learn of the bitter bureaucratic infighting that occurred between SOE and M16 as well as DeGaulle and FDR's mutual hatred. The book is well researched, written and is not boring. Period photos enhance the reading experience. Another outstanding work by popular historian Olson. Well done!

This book is a treasure for any history buffs, or anyone who lived through this era. It's beautifully written. I'll rave about this book to my friends, but NO ONE will be allowed to borrow it! Any reader of this fine history will appreciate the immense amount of research that went into compiling this excellent writing.

This is an excellent book. I have read numerous books about World War II. This book deals with matters and events of which I knew little and have seen next to nothing in the books I have read. It brings light to the contributions made to the allied war effort by nations that were overrun by the Nazis and that set up their governments in the island of Great Britain to carry on their resistance to the Nazis during the occupation of their countries. Their contributions actually contributed substantially to the allied war effort. The Polish air squadrons, for example, played a big part in the Battle of Britain. Their experience in fighting the Nazis when their country was overrun was invaluable in that battle. The book also addresses the failures of the British, seeming in large part from their arrogance that they knew how to do things better than the leaders of the conquered countries. The SOE, in particular. At one time I wanted to scream and pull my hair out. The SOE agents were trained in how to communicate their intelligence via radio, and that they always needed to start with a special code so that the SOE people in Britain would know that their reports had not been compromised. They sent an SOE agent into Holland who was immediately captured. They compelled him to act like all was well and to send back reports with information they wanted sent. He eventually did so, but of course intentionally left out the verification code. The British thought, well, he must have forgot. So, for well over a year the Germans played the English, sho sent numerous agents into Holland, all of whom were immediately caught and many of them executed. These newly captured agents also sent reports back to England, leaving off the verification code. The British couldn't figure out why their agents kept forgetting the code, at least until they received a radio transmission from the German high command thanking them for sending all of their agents, equipment, ammunition and supplies directly to the Germans for over a year. The same thing happened in France. But, when a compromised agent left off his verification code, the British monitors in England radioed back that he had forgot to use his code and to please use it next time. Of course, then the Germans knew a code was required. The stupidity is mind boggling. So stupid, in fact, that even today the British cannot bring themselves to admit their errors. There are also many very human stories, of resistance leaders in the occupied countries taking daring action that put their lives at risk. Even by people you would never suspect could be so heroic. When the operation Market Garden, the landing of paratroopers at Arnhem, turned into a complete fiasco, many ordinary people in Holland risked their lives to hide solderers, many of which developed bonds of friendship that lasted the rest of their lives. In fact, it was extraordinary and very touching. But I won't give it away. All in all, this is an excellent book and highly recommended and not just for those that are World War II buffs.

This book is an outstanding and informative guide and reference for understanding the complexity of “Infinite Jest”. Be sure to look at the many charts at the end of the book especially the one that details timeline for the chapters.

I just completed reading Infinite Jest for the second time (first time was about 12 years ago) and I was looking for a book to plainly and clearly explicate the intricate story line and relationship between all the characters. In my opinion, Elegant Complexity does an excellent job of this. This book has helped me to understand better what exactly is going on in Infinite Jest, even after the second read. The book essentially is a chapter by chapter analysis of Infinite Jest. It does a very good job of teasing out the different plot threads and relationships between the characters, while helpfully highlighting the interplay between Infinite Jest and other literary works, e.g., Hamlet and A Clockwork Orange. Some might find the book a bit tiresome, especially when compared to Infinite Jest itself. But if you are looking for a well organized reference guide to Infinite Jest then I recommend it highly.

This guide to Infinite Jest justified itself alone by being able to string together all the uses of the color blue. I had tacked Infinite Jest (IJ) this past summer and while I found it a wild ride, was left with several major questions. Elegant Complexity did not spell out the answers, but helped me see the guide wires enough to find my own way through. I was shocked at how large this guide was, it gave IJ a run for its money. I would suggest using Elegant Complexity the same way I did, as a reader for those who have already finished IJ. Elegant Complexity definitely improved and enhanced my enjoyment of IJ.

Having made the commitment to tackle this opus, I found myself scouring the Internet after every chapter, hoping others had left a trail of breadcrumbs through the woods. At about pg. 200 (and completely hooked), I knew it was time for a serious road map. Carlisle's chapter summaries are wonderful; he doesn't tell you what to think but rather highlights intriguing lines and phrases that you might have missed the first or fifth time through. His chronology is indispensable. No spoilers, but he brings recurring motifs and themes to the forefront so you're more likely to remember when you see them again. And let's be honest: the greatest challenge (and fun) of reading IJ is remembering all the whats and whos. I had already assumed I'd have to read the book a second time to catch all the clues and references. Thanks to this guide, I know where to look.

I gave this five stars but of course this is because I'm a major Infinite Jest and DFW fan. For newcomers, I would suggest starting with his story collections and non-fiction writings first to get accustomed with his style, Then start with his first novel Broom of the System to get a taste of what a DFW novel is like before diving into Infinite Jest. Then you will find this book, Elegant Complexity by Mr. Greg Carlisle very valuable for added insight and understanding on IJ.

I agree with Oakley and towercity. This book is almost entirely plot summary and even that is not done as well as it should be. Very little analysis. You won't learn much (if anything) of Wallace's skills here. Sorry I bought it.

Impossible to read IJ without this handy companion. The author spent years compiling it with obsessive attention to detail.

This is a great companion to Infinite Jest. I read it chapter by chapter with the Wallace.

Review

“Lively and learned . . . Brands has produced a narrative that pulsates vigorously . . . The three senators wear themselves out and all but die on the job, their respective causes still unresolved, their long public service having earned them fame, but not the political prize for which they most lusted: the presidency (though not for want of trying).” —Harold Holzer, Wall Street Journal   “A historical spellbinder . . . A lively, vivid, and thoroughly researched account of a time when discord gripped the nation and wouldn’t let go.” —David Holahan, Christian Science Monitor   “Brands’s easy prose and superior, simple organization makes this work an engrossing, entertaining, and educating read on issues important then that echo today in the modern debate on the limits of federal government power.” —Robert Davis, New York Journal of Books“They were called ‘The Great Triumvirate’—three senators whose rivalries, alliances, and work in the tumultuous battles of the 19th century profoundly influenced the course of American history. H. W. Brands tells the story of Clay, Calhoun, and Webster with verve and clarity, reminding us of a bygone age when giants truly walked the floor of the United States Senate.” —Jon Meacham, author of The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels   “H. W. Brands has brought us a searching and excellent account of three legendary Americans whose leadership and rivalries did so much to shape the period of our history between that of the Founders and the Civil War. Heirs of the Founders should remind those of our own time how important Clay, Calhoun, and Webster are to the nation we live in today.” —Michael Beschloss, author of Presidents of War   “H. W. Brands, with his characteristic combination of sweep and eye for detail, tells the story—always exciting, often inspiring, ultimately tragic—of the titans who tried to guide the handiwork of the Founding Fathers through the turbulent first half of the nineteenth century. He weaves a cautionary tale for our own time of troubles.” —Richard Brookhiser, author of John Marshall: The Man Who Made the Supreme Court"Brands uses the life stories of three consequential early-19th-century American politicians—all with unfulfilled aspirations to become president—to show how tensions inherent in the founding fathers’ vision of the country led to the calamity of the Civil War . . . This fascinating history illuminates rifts that still plague the country today."—Publishers Weekly"An engrossing and revealing account of personal rivalries that played out on a national scale."—Booklist

H.W. Brands is an excellent historian, highly skilled at researching a topic and at telling a tale in engaging, illuminating prose. This, his latest book, contains many of those elements, making it an enjoyable and informative read. But it is not without its problems. One inherent problem with a book such as "Heirs of the Founders" is that it focuses on the lives of three different men--Daniel Webster, Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun. It is difficult enough to compile a biography of one individual in less than 400 pages, but Brands tells the reader about these three men in only 370 pages of text. Such an approach is bound to leave out much, and that is what keeps this good book from being a great one.For example, Brands says that Thomas Jefferson "rode the wave of opposition [to the Alien and Sedition Acts] into the White House . . ." But the Election of 1800, to which Brands is referring, was far more complex. Indeed, had there been no Three-Fifths Compromise, John Adams would have won the election outright. The compromise allowed southern states to count slaves as three-fifths of a person when determining the state's population and thus the number of representatives the state would get in the House. They would each get an equal number of electors. As it was, no candidate got a majority of electoral votes, sending the election into the House, which elected Jefferson. A simple sentence or two would have clarified the issue.Brands brings up the gag rule but does not explain what it was. He seems to assume his reader knows. The gag rule was a resolution in the House that tabled, without discussion, all petitions regarding slavery. But Brands doesn't tell us this.In addition, Brands makes no mention of Daniel Webster's affair with Sarah Goodrich, a young artist. The affair took place in the late 1820s, while Webster's wife was dying of stomach cancer back in Massachusetts. This behavior certainly gives an insight into Webster's character, but Brands seems to be in a hurry and so skips or glosses over many aspects of these three men and their times. In another example, Brands does not mention Henry Clay's most famous quote--"I'd rather be right than be president." Spoken in 1838, it was seen as sour grapes by many. Nor does he mention that Clay was an inveterate gambler. Or that he could, at times, be downright nasty. The fact that the book has fifty-nine chapters in 370 pages only adds to the rushed feeling of "Heirs of the Founders." What Brands has given us is good. But another hundred or so pages could have made it great.

H. W. Brands has written another superb volume, primarily relying upon the speeches, and written words of the “Heirs of the Founders” in their attempt to prevent the shattering of the Union. Henry Clay was determined to sail between the “Scylla of states’ rights and the Charybdis of rampant federalism”, a perilous choice that still has meaning for us today. He was guided by the realism of a resident of a border state: “A statesman did what he could in his country’s service, not what he would.” The ever more infamous John C. Calhoun; a man whose ambition was disguised as intellect, and believed that the institution of slavery was not a necessary evil; but in fact, a positive good that enabled a superior culture to thrive. Daniel Webster; a ‘Master of Persuasion’ who was weakened by an ever more strident and powerful abolitionist movement in Massachusetts that left diminishing room for compromise. This is the story of their last great work; the Missouri Compromise of 1850; the abomination of the Fugitive Slave Law which allowed the kidnapping and sale of free American citizens, and the compulsion of other Americans to cooperate with this act; as epitomized in tragedy of Solomon NorthrupTwelve Years a Slave. In retrospect we must balance the worth of a ‘compromise’ that gave us ten more years of national misery and the suffering of slavery against ten years in which the North became more industrialized and with an ever more increasing disparity of wealth and population between the regions. My examination copy lacked the index and illustrations, but contained the notes and a brief introduction to the original sources

University of Texas history professor H.W. Brands has written a biography of the three giants who dominated Congress in the first half of the 19th Century, namely Henry Clay, John Calhoun and Daniel Webster. All three were great intellects and orators who had a common dislike, for different reasons, of President Andrew Jackson.Clay comes on the scene in 1811 where in his first term he becomes Speaker of the House. He and Calhoun would join together as the leading “war hawks” and push Madison into war against England. They would later split over the issues of tariffs, slavery and most important, the preservation of the Union. Clay would become the author of the American System based on protective tariffs, internal improvements and a national bank which made him the true heir to Alexander Hamilton. In 1820 he would put together the Missouri Compromise which delayed the ultimate reckoning of the slavery issue and thereby allowed the continued development of a growing America.Calhoun, who served as vice-president to both John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson, quite a feat in its own right, became the tribune of the South. He fought tariffs, championed slavery and the ability of states to nullify federal laws they opposed which offered the theoretical basis for secession.Webster had a brilliant career as a lawyer where he was victorious in such major Supreme Court cases as McCulloch v. Maryland, Dartmouth College and Gibbons v. Ogden. Although he is most remembered for his “Union, now and forever” speech in his Reply to Hayne, he supported New England secession during the War of 1812.In 1850 all three of them, now all over 70, came together in the great debate over the admission of California into the Union as a free state, the treatment of fugitive slaves and the extension of slavery into the New Mexico Territory. The end result of the debate was yet another successful Clay compromise. And it was here where Webster in order to save the Union bent over backwards against his abolitionist constituency, on the issues of fugitive slaves and slavery in the New Mexico Territory, to agree with Clay. Oh to be in the Senate Gallery to hear the debate. The next best thing is reading Brands’ account. All three would be dead within two years.Brands brings to life these three great personalities as they dominated the Congress for 40 years. It is history at its best. I only wish our current Congress had at least one Clay or a Webster and unfortunately too much of the nullification spirit of John Calhoun is alive and well in both parties today.

OUR STORY Traveling is a passion of the "Greater than a Tourist" series creator. Lisa studied abroad in college, and for their honeymoon Lisa and her husband toured Europe. During her travels to Malta, an older man tried to give her some advice based on his own experience living on the island since he was a young boy. She was not sure if she should talk to the stranger but was interested in his advice. When traveling to some places she was wary to talk to locals because she was afraid that they weren't being genuine. Through her travels, Lisa learned how much locals had to share with tourists. Lisa created the "Greater Than a Tourist" book series to help connect people with locals. I found the book to read more like an outline. It's double spaced and most pages have less than 14 lines. It's a nice starting point, a draft, but so much more could have been added. I believe street addresses to recommended businesses should have been included. Contact information such as phone numbers, websites, hours of operation, and images of maps for the areas would have been ideal.

The book shows its age terribly: a wealth of irrelevant material and a plague of middle French quotations (untranslated, of course) which show either the author's erudition or her utter contempt for those who would read her work without knowing French (Merde!). Buy Robert Graves' White Goddess instead; or anything by Graves for that matter.

Because Eliot's "Waste Land" is taught in virtually every British and American lit survey course, the name "Jessie Weston" and the title "From Ritual to Romance" have become familiar to perhaps millions of readers throughout the world. However, if readers hope to get beyond the "trivial pursuit" question of the source to which Eliot was indebted and to a genuine understanding of the "Fisher King" myth, they will need to read that source for themselves. Though not a quick and accessible read, the book repays the reader's patience. Not only does it help bring Eliot's poem to life but it illuminates the poetic tradition from Chaucer to Eliot and makes more meaningful the numerous adaptations of the myth in modern culture--from David Lodge's "Small World" to Robin Williams' "The Fisher King." Not for a sophomore survey course, but definitely for any upperlevel course on Eliot or Arthurian legend.

So many of the quotes and excerpts are in French, German, Latin, etc and aren't translated! I don't get it...

English is NOT my mother tongue. But I have read a few boo books including the magnificent one-volume edition of The Golden Bough, which I keep reading with great pleasure and profit.I was tempted to give one star Miss Weston's book, but no guts; I have settled on two. Here are my reasons:1. The book needs a major editing. An able editor could free the book from its deadwood and unnecessary repetitions saving perhaps some 50 pages from this Dover edition. The able editor could also apply the rules of sentence and paragraph construction to ease the reader's access to and comprehension of the topic. Although there are some few lines that are clear tot he reader, this virtue cannot be found in any single page.2. All non-English citations should be translated into English and included in the text or in footnotes. To a reader who does not know those languages the citations are useless..3. An appendix ought to be provided to include the names of important personages in the book. The Dover edition itself is flawless: Good paper, good print, and good binding., .

The formatting is rubbish. Every line of the book is broken in half. For heaven's sake this should be blindingly obvious to any reviewer. Appalling that it is allowed for sale. I shall be seeking refund. I bought the other avaiable edition - which has proper formatting.

Based on other reviews I expected great things. What I got was a book written in the 20s which has never been updated. The quotes from other works are in French or other languages without translation. There is nothing here that has not been covered by newer works in greater detail.

This book, published in 1920, was a seminal influence on both T.S. Eliot in "The Wasteland" and Ernest Hemingway in "The Sun Also Rises". Eighty years later, it's still easy to see why. Although the book is short-just over 200 pages-it is almost unbelievably wide-ranging. As she deconstructs the elements of the various versions of the tales of the Holy Grail, Ms. Weston takes the reader globetrotting and time-traveling, from Vedic India to turn of the century Africa and Japan, with stops in between in Europe and the Middle East from antiquity to her own time. She relates the Grail stories to archaic sacred kingship, fertility rituals and dances, the rites and myths of Adonis, Attis and Mithra, as well as Gnostic Christianity. If you're interested in the Grail, the history of western culture, the history of religious ideas, or the transmission of myth and ritual into literary forms, "From Ritual To Romance" is truly a revelation.

this book is a must for anybody interested in the tales and legends centred upon the Grial. It is also very pleasant to read. The author presented here the (then, that is 1920) revolutionary theory that most elements in the cycle of the Grial stories are actually the remnants of incredibly old fertility rituals that, somehow, survived in remote parts of the Roman empire. It is extremely interesting to see how the author reached this conclusion and how she was prepared to defend it against the campaigners for the christianity of the Grial. And on top of everything, she writes in a deliciously archaic English, sprinkled with French and Latin (mind the quotations. They are not translated)

I read this series with my daughter when she was younger, so I decided to order the first book in the series to read aloud to my 4th grade class. They are quite captivated! The writer starts off the book by warning the reader that they should read a different book if they like happy stories. HAHA! The characters are wonderful! Count Olaf is dreadful and Violet, Klaus, and Sonny are intelligent, resourceful children who just can't catch a break! The story line is so outrageous that it's not too scary or sad...just great fun. And as I teacher I love the constant vocabulary lessons that are intertwined into the story. "Intertwined" is a word which means to connect or link two or more things closely together. I'm hoping my students will enjoy this book so much they will continue with the series on their own.

A Series of Unfortunate EventsThe Bad Beginningby. Lemony SnicketRating: ***** (5 stars)Book Length: 188 pagesGenre: Children, Children's Chapter, Middle SchoolIt has been a while since I last read this book and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed returning to its pages. The most unique, intriguing, and frustrating aspect of the book is that the main character of the story could be argued to be the narrator. Everything is told through the voice of Lemony Snicket, which is actually the narrator and not the author's actual name. The style is not a typical style for most children's books and it is pulled off with success. The writing style is amazing. You are pulled into the story, engage with all the characters, and before you know you have finished the tale. I almost went and immediately bought the next book. The only thing that stopped me was the huge pile of books I currently have to finish. It truly is no wonder that this series has obtained such success. There is one aspect of the writing style that I found quite annoying. The narrator continually defined the words that he and the other characters were using. As the story progressed the other characters also begin defining the words that they were using. It was annoying because I am an adult reader who was well aware of what all these words meant. Yet, while I was quite engaged by the story the book was not written for me. It was written for middle school readers who are still increasing their vocabulary. The first time I encountered Snicket's unique way of defining words in a story I knew what he was doing. While I, as an adult reader, was slightly annoyed I was also kind of awed by his genius. He has this book that he doesn't want to dumb down for his readers, yet he also doesn't want to loose their interest as they encounter words they may not be familiar with. To decrease the frustration of reading by including the definitions into the quirky flow that already existed in the novel is nothing short of genius. As reviewed on The Book Recluse Review.

As a 12 year old girl who read this book at age 9 and has since read the series twice I would recommend this book to anyone. If you are a parent trying to get their kid to read this is the perfect book, since it has a movie, after the kids watch they will be willing to read the books even more.I do have to admit some of the situations may be a little harsh for younger children and seeing as there are 13 books they might find it too long. The Baudelaires Siblings. Violet, Klaus and Sunny live a happy live with their two parents in the Baudelaire Mansion, but one gloomy day their banker Mr.Poe informs them there has been a terrible fire that has taken their parents life. The Baudelaires now orphans move with their closest relative (in location not family bloodline) Count Olaf a wicked man with greedy intentions, getting the Baudelaire fortune.Lemony Snickets mysterious ways and beautiful writing show in this book, as we take a plunge in the Baudelaires unfortunate live and the turmoil they go through living with Count Olaf.

This book tells the story of Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire, three orphans whose parents died in a terrible fire. They were sent to live with Count Olaf, a terrible, greedy man who was after the Baudelaire's fortune. The story tells of how the Baudelaire children stop Count Olaf's evil plans. This first book, in a 13 story series, is a bad, but interesting beginning to The Series of Unfortunate Events.

It is a great series to read as a family for those with kids at a fifth grade reading level or higher. Particularly with the Netflix series out watching that first even got my reluctant reader in the house interested.Parents be aware that it does feature unfortunate events, as the title clearly states, but this parent feels that the children's never give up attitudes and constructive ways of dealing with their loss(es) is a good lesson which really cannot be conveyed without hardship and that this is a lesson best learned early and carefully when possible. I would prefer my kids understand from a fictional characters example that a good attitude and positive outlets for negative emotions are the best course of action before he/she experiences similar loss themselves so that my kids can better deal with the loss weather I am there to help or in the event that I'm not for whatever reason. The way Mr. Snicket explains some higher level vocabulary and certain concepts such as dramatic irony(in book 2) is also a plus as is his tongue in cheek humor. He writes on a fifth grade level but, kinda like Spongebob, he puts some tidbits for adult brains in there too that you wont be embarrassed about when you child gets older and figures it out.

This book doesn't really relate to me personally because my dreams tend to be a little different than the majority. However it is a good, detailed book. I watched the author on Gaia and decided that I wanted to support him as an author and spiritual teacher. I will gift this book To someone it can relate too and I know that they will appreciate it and find it helpful.

Have other good books for interpreting symbols, etc. but this is my new favorite.Am enjoying reading my way through their other work to learn how they apply it to llife.I am intrigued by those books, so got this for reference.

This dictionary has helped me to dream amazing journeys, and then to understand some of the symbols therein. I recommend this to anyone and everyone who wants to make changes in their lives. This book is truly miraculous. Everything we need to know comes through our dreams if we could only understand them. Lead them, instead of being totally bewildered and confused all the time.

This is pretty hard to interpret your dreams. Although it is interesting. But not a quick go to guide.

It’s what I wanted

Kaya's Publications are extremely thorough and relevant to navigating various signs that are being presented to us ALL the time.An Absolute Must for those increasing the depth of one's spiritual understanding.

It's long and complicated and I barely open it.

There are so many psychology based dictionaries on dreams. The all seem to say the same with no real answers. This Source Code Dream Dictionary hands down the absolute best ever. Bless Kaya for all he experienced to bring this to the world. Thanks also to GaiamTV for interviewing Kaya. Thank you, KAYA!
