bought as a valentines gift. was not disappointed.

The book features covers of gay porn magazines. The content of the photos vary from coy (side nudity, non-frontal nudity, bare buns) to fully bare-balled men to XXX porn with men performing sexual acts.; Many photos featured magazine covers from before I was of age or entirely before my time. This book is strictly beefcake and is delicious.

Great retro covers from a fun time

A great throwback collectable.

Good times

I love this coffee table book!

He Aint Heavy Her's My Brudda! Or should I say BH BUddy! Arrived in Super Good condition even through the HEAVY LA Traffic here!

I used to have a stash of magazines like this that I kept under my mattress. When I went away for college, I got careless, and left the whole load of them, which had by this time grown to a stack about 2 feet high, at the foot of my bed wedged between a couch and the two walls adjacent to the bed and couch. My sister, being the snoop that she was, found them whilst going thru big brother's things one day. Sibling rivalry got the best of her at some point and she told Mom about them one day when she was dispatched to retrieve something in the vicinity in my room. Our Mom, being a hardcore JW, burned the whole Salem's Lot of them in a big barrel in the back yard of our house, in an effort to exorcise the demons that she felt inhabited them. This was how she ended up finding out I was gay--in eye popping, full color detail. Ah, memories...This is a sturdy, studly collection of hot pictures triggering vivid memories that came flooding back as I remembered many of these images, exactly, well maybe with the exception of all the pages that were stuck together, as they were. If you have a similar story and wish to revisit a time before life became all too serious in the early 80's, this collection will surely -ahem- pique your interest. Just don't go pitching a tent under the covers. (*;

In Horn’s captivating history of NYC's Blackwell’s Island -- the predecessor of Rikers -- the best-laid plans of politicians, moralists, and both science- and quackery-minded reformers of prisons, orphanages, hospitals, and workhouses go awry from rehab to perdition. In just a few years. Then as now, NYC's dumping ground for criminals -- and victims seen as no better than criminals -- starved and sickened and corrupted and even drove insane the very people it was supposed to punish (inmates) and protect (patients and wards, even widows).Reading deeply into neglected public and private archives, and the frothy front-page news of many decades past, Horn sings the stories of villains, victims, and the rare hero. They show that neither lax bureaucracy nor deliberate vengefulness can be blamed for the worst cruelties toward the incarcerated. Then as now, the best ticket to the island of the judicially damned was not proof of a crime, but the burden of poverty.

This is a book with brains and heart. Stacy Horn has brought to life the lost history of New York City’s dumping ground where the insane, the poor, and the grossly unlucky were stashed out of sight. It’s a remarkable story, and a remarkable book that should become the standard text for any historian or reader interested in learning the awful truth of good intentions. Ms. Horn writes with great empathy and clarity to expose the harrowing tales of individuals -- society’s expendables -- who were caught up in the prejudice, revulsion, and deceit of “the authorities”.The stories are so sad, and so absurd, it’s hard to believe they can be real; but Ms. Horn is an expert researcher and storyteller and I’m glad that this history, and these people, will, thanks to her, never be forgotten.

Once again, Stacy shows us the truth is more horrific than fiction. Right under New Yorkers noses, as they toil through their regular daily routines, real horrors in New York are played out on a daily basis. How this can go on right under the noses of a whole city is mind boggling but it did here and other places as well in NYC.Another great read from Stacy Horn.

Excellent, excellent book. I've been wanting to read this book for a while. When it came down in price, I nabbed it, and I'm so glad I did. Whenever I hear people discuss how much better things were in the good old days...I will shove this book under their nose. New York was an awful place pretty much the entire 1800's. It was even worse for the poor, those with disabilities, the insane, and for women with any of these problems (more than men). Add to this the fact that no one understood that disease is caused by dirt, lack of food, and small organisms...you have a huge mess on your hands. I had read a lot about Blackwell Island other places, but this book gave you the whole dark story from beginning to end. The research for this book was phenomenal. I was amazed at the amount of information Horn was able to get for a place a couple of hundred years old. Names of people involved, the horrible commissioners, politicians, the clergymen, etc. really made this book come alive...and you realize how real all of this was. An explosive account of a horrible time!

This book was not only moving to me simply because I am an Irish second generation citizen and witnessed first hand the effects of Alcoholism. This book humbles and guides me to be a better social worker because oppression and suffering knows no color or boundaries so we need to embrace the new fall guys (immigrants) because at one time it either was or could of been you

Thought this was a fictional book based off of non-fiction (downloaded the sample based off the name alone). I cried at moments and was angered at many others. Well done Ms. Horn!

Author Stacy Horn brings conditions in the 19th century to life for her readers in her non-fiction work, Damnation Island. Readers are pulled in immediately by the anecdotal report of life for a poor, sick, and injured young man who, through neglect and starvation, is "cared for" by the alleged well-meaning men and women of 19th century charity homes. I had a difficult time putting this down, and wanted to keep reading this book. Stacy Horn does a wonderful job in stating the facts without allowing personal sentimentality to interfere with the storyline. Highly recommended reading.

This book is essential reading if you wish to understand how we got Riker's Island and Hart Island and why both places urgently need our attention. This is Mayor De Blasio's "tale of two cities." Yet, he is reluctant to make penal reform a priority in his administration. There is a long established tradition of looking the other way and ignoring human rights in New York City. This book is a thrill to read. It even references a recently exposed cistern on Hart Island.

Many historical mysteries are very lopsided affairs. They're either historical data dumps with page after page of exposition or stories that would fit well in modern day save for a reference or two to tunics instead of shirts. Not only does the author balance those well, but there's actual mystery, interesting characters and believable tension in the story. The characters were nicely done. Each had enough of a personality to be remembered through the book without any of them being over-the-top. There wasn't any "Wait, who's that again?" when various characters were considered as suspects. Sir Faucon, the main character, is a bit of an Every Man, but the book sprinkles details through the book that keep him from being generic. Edmund the monk, his sidekick, is rather disagreeable but is slowly humanized through the book. Readers may not like him even by the end of the book but, like the main character, may come to appreciate his good points. One of the things I particularly appreciated was how everything fit together. The murder didn't occur in a void. It was the result of multiple events and circumstances that came together to bring things to a head. There was too much pressure for things to continue in that village indefinitely. The murder was simply one of the most likely outcomes given all that had happened and all that was going on.For those who enjoy politics, there is some in the book as well. And for those who hate politics, don't worry. It's handled with a light touch, none of the "I know that you know that I know therefore ... " silliness. There are a few small political skirmishes in the book with the promise of more to come, but they add flavor and realism instead of overwhelming the plot.In short, it's solid writing with a great plot and good characters. I look forward to reading more in the series.

This novel's greatest asset is its fine description of medieval village life. As an equal fan of history and mystery, I enjoyed this aspect of the book. Other aspects were generally mediocre. Characterizations are shallow, and the mystery plot is so involved as to strain credibility. The author also earns a demerit for lack of originality by involving a herbalist monk in the solution of the mystery. This character is a blatant, though pale, imitation of Ellis Peters superb Brother Cadfael. Apparently this author's other series novels are steamy medieval romances, a genre I shudder to even imagine. As a reader who loathes romance, I'm grateful to her for refraining from introducing any romance elements into this novel. Lukewarm though I am to the mystery side of this book, I will read further in this series simply to see more of its well-executed evocation of medieval society.

This is a good start to what might well be an excellent series.Sir Faucon de Remis, a Norman knight, is a returned Crusader after fighting in the Holy Land with King Richard I. As a landless knight, he needs a way to make his living and is persuaded by his uncle, Bishop William, to accept the office of “Keeper of the Pleas”, or Crowner as they were commonly called, a newly-created position intended to curb the rapacity of the Sheriffs, and ensure the Crown received all monies, taxes, and revenues that was its due. The clerk assigned to assist him is Brother Edmund, a Benedictine monk well-versed in the law, who is an officious and unlikeable man.Their first case is the death of a miller and it is fascinating to be part of the investigation as they learn step-by-step what is involved and how far the power of a crowner reaches. As a former soldier Crowner Faucon is familiar with death, but not so familiar with the subtle differences between a natural death by drowning and murder. Coincidentally, Brother Colin, an herbalist, is there to give advice to the new Crowner on how to tell the difference. This is fiction and I don’t find this coincidence too hard to swallow, and, let’s face it, Sir Faucon had to be educated somehow or else there would have been no story!I have read a number of mediaeval series so I am familiar with the terms and customs, and this author does justice to the setting and lifestyle of the period. Clothing is described in detail where appropriate to the story and there are some lovely descriptive passages, especially when Sir Faucon first sees the Priory of Radegund. The characters are fleshed out enough so that the reader can remember who each one is, and also form an opinion of them. The dialogue is natural and the prose is well-written and edited, with no glaring errors that I saw. There is also a good mystery, and the solving of it is done in a believable way. Brother Edmund slowly undergoes a personality change and I think I will enjoy reading more about this pair. The story is book-ended by a delusional child-killer (the killing is not described) that seems to have no place, but must have a purpose that will become evident in future books.

Inside The Alamo, by Jim Murphy

From School Library Journal

Grade 6 Up-Murphy boldly broaches the near-mythical battle of the Alamo, a Spanish mission in San Antonio whose name has become synonymous with Texas's independence. Acknowledging in his notes that "[m]ost of these questions [regarding "unresolved issues" of Alamo legend] will probably never be answered definitively," Murphy gives it his best shot and the result is an absorbing, interpretive, highly readable account of a two-week period in American history in which a couple of hundred independent Texans (Anglo Texians and Hispanic Tejanos) played a major role in U.S. expansionism. The siege of the Alamo is a well-told tale but lore, strongly abetted by Hollywood, has clouded the facts surrounding this suicidal stand. Murphy has done an admirable job of separating prejudicial speculation (by survivors on both sides) from documentation. He addresses the volatile issue of exemplary bravery, especially regarding the fate of David Crockett, diplomatically. Sidebars abound and the one-page biographical sketches, including photographs, of the major figures-especially the trinity of Jim Bowie, William Travis, and David Crockett-supplement archival photographs and illustrations, helping to set perspective, while "fast and loose" visual interpretations of the final battle show historical revisions. An extensive, annotated bibliography provides an excellent sampler of the plethora of articles and books on the Alamo.John Sigwald, Unger Memorial Library, Plainview, TXCopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Gr. 4-8. Murphy's thorough research and solid narrative style combine to provide an in-depth account of this famous 1836 siege. Beginning with a description of the early Anglo settlement in Texas, the author explains how relations between ranchers and Santa Ana's government became strained, leading the Anglos to feel they had little choice except to defend their crumbling fortress to the death. He also discusses the strained leadership within the Alamo, why other Texans decided not to help, and Santa Ana's motives for wanting to annihilate the Anglos. Murphy's forte is his ability to tell a good story while retaining his integrity as a historian. Point by point he documents and identifies facts, rumors, myths, and conflicting testimony, allowing readers to judge where the truth may lie and giving them insight into how historical research works. Frequent inset articles highlight the important participants on both sides (including Santa Ana, Jim Bowie, David Crockett, and Jose de la Pena), providing military and personal details that add to the account, and a variety of period illustrations--maps, etchings, and artwork reproductions--complement the text. With an appended list of Alamo participants and an extensive, annotated bibliography, which features some primary sources, this resource is not only a valuable addition to American history units but also a great introduction to the historical writing method. Didn't like it. Waste of money. Not good pictures and would not be interesting to children. Would not recommend this book.

This is an outstanding book. There are several good books about the Alamo but this one by Jim Murphy is well written and has a true feel of endearment for those that sacrificed their lives and left loved ones behind. The cover is very striking and captivating and I immediately was drawn to the book. The layout of the book is exquisite. It really captures the historical meaning and importance of this event of heroism and bravery and enables you to imagine a feel for the time, place and people. This is a beautiful looking and splendidly written book. I flip through its pages often and just remember.

Very informative and balanced. This is written in a way that will entertain historians, young and old. I've taught Texas history in elementary for over a decade, and I learned something new in every chapter.

Review

"Transfixing . . a haunting change of pace."–New York Times "[An] interesting, well-executed book. Ultimately, it’s less a narrative about Lester than it is a prose poem about loners and losers, the many Lesters who “never entirely disappear as adults, even if you still persist in not seeing them.”–Publishers Weekly"[A] poetic attempt not to fully form a life but only to capture moments of memory and objects of counterintuitive beauty. . . The prose is crisp and thoughtful and well-matched to the photos that show the side of America to which even most Americans never give a second thought." –Kirkus Review"An enigmatic, innovative, and deadpan novel . . . what [Zellar and Soth have] mined here falls somewhere in between W. G. Sebald’s photograph-strewn novels and Carson McCullers’s small-town freaks and loners: The result is an unaccountably strange and liberating narrative." –Vogue“House of Coates can only be described as a personal truth of sorts, one wrapped in artistic mystery and pierced with startling photographs. . . Zellar's prose encapsulating Lester's life so well, that it won't matter if he is made of flesh and blood or not, for you will feel he is undeniably real, with no need for further research.” –The Intentional"A kind of case study of human drift."–Star Tribune"This collaboration between writer Brad Zellar and photographer Alec Soth…captures in 133 pages the essence of those who live on the edges of society.”–Pioneer Press"A standout. . . exquisitely written."—Book Riot"The book is really as much about the place as it is about Lester...and both story and photos describe a connection among them that’s almost spiritual. . . this is a truly, deeply Minnesotan story, and one well worth spending some time with."–MNArtists.org"You’ll be swept away by House of Coates. . . The best picture book ever for adults?"–Donna Trump"Brad Zellar makes intriguing and vital observations on types of character traits that defy cultural assumptions and stereotypes of masculinity. Combining vivid writing with photographs by Alec Soth, the novel becomes an enlivened testament to our complicated associations and relationships with the world and each other."—TJ Eckleburg Review“Gentle and unsparing in equal measure.”—Bustle“A beautiful object, both for readers of fiction and for people who like Alec’s photography who are also interested in artists’ books.” —OZY“A very handsome paperback edition. . . a new afterword wraps the whole mystery of Lester beautifully.”—MinnPost“Loneliness . . . with a seedy flavor, a weatherworn feel, both angrier and more subdued, totally frank and intimate, but also silent and empty. What’s truly amazing about this book, having just described it in such terms, is that it strikes some very familiar chord without seeming cliché or archetypal or borrowed.”—Nomadic Press

Amazing, existential piece with matching photography that pulls at the heart-strings until a final redemption at a potentially questionable end. I bought this twice--once for the piece itself and then again to get an autographed copy. If you can get this at a reasonable cost, it's a worthy addition to a library of photo art books, with narrative. Of note, the spiral-bound format is fantastic--if you can get a brown or green cover book with the spiral bound content, elect for that.

House of Coates is a dark and compelling book about people who don't manage to connect in the modern world for reasons not even they themselves seem able to articulate. When the main character makes the the attempt to do so you realize he seems to be grasping at chimera and doesn't really know either, expect that something seems to be missing in either his ability to find meaning in his life, or life in general. He seems condemned to lead a lost, sad, solitary existence. The explanation for this quandry seems ineffable to both the writer and the main character. The photos only contribute further to this mystery of incompleteness. The photographer and writer are to be commended with trying to make us better acquainted with this isolated, painful life that some people seem to have confined themselves to, either through mental illness, or inability to connect with the broader world.

This book caught me by surprise. I typically read genre fiction of one ilk or another and would never have picked this up except for high praise it was given by others. There is so much wonderful writing in here that I'm delighted that I gave it a try. Here's a little piece: "Have you ever had the feeling that there wasn't a soul left on the planet that remembered your name or face or the sound of your laugh? That was a Lester question, and his answer was yes." Now you know a lot about Lester and how you are going to learn more about him in the book. The photographs were also much more than they appeared to be. Flipping the pages before starting to read, I dismissed them as technically awful and thematically uninteresting. Wow. Marry them with the text and now they are perfect. They capture the spirit and soul, or lack thereof, of Lester's world and life. This is a poignant view into a world most of us give no thought to. It is a view well worth absorbing.

I bought this to fulfill the micropress category in the 2017 Read Harder Book Riot challenge. It was a wonderful little afternoon read. There is real art in the brevity of the telling. It leaves space for the reader to fill with his or her own experience. Really beautiful.

What a marvelous, affecting novel. In a series of terse, self-contained vignettes, Mr. Zellar opens for us the sad, shadowy world of the homeless -- the loneliness, covertness and defeat; one, for which most of us, scarcely exists. That Mr. Zellar has succeeded in bringing this world to recognizable, three-dimensional life and has done so in fewer than 135 pages is a remarkable achievement indeed.I am eager to read more of Mr. Zellar' s work.

A gorgeous, heartbreaking book about loneliness. It traces, in words and snow-drift-laden photos, the amount of space that can be taken up by desolation. What makes a person exist? Is it a baptism? A trail of (disposable) photos? Can a person be brought into existence by someone who is trying to find him (or her)? Zellar and Soth have built a highly thought-provoking piece of literature.

aaa+++

Zellar and Soth create a beautiful mosaic of post-mythology.The parable that emerges is Christ-like both in its mystery and compassion. An outcast with no way home finds his way into your heart.Worth your time...

Amazon.com Review

David Abram's writing casts a spell of its own as he weaves the reader through a meticulously researched work that gently addresses such seemingly daunting topics as where the past and future exist, the relationship between space and time, and how the written word serves to sever humans from their primordial source of sustenance: the earth. "Only as the written text began to speak would the voices of the forest, and of the river, begin to fade. And only then would language loosen its ancient associations with the invisible breath, the spirit sever itself from the wind, the psyche dissociate itself from the environing air," writes Abram of the separation caused by the proliferation of the written word. In writing The Spell of the Sensuous, Abram consulted an engaging collection of peoples and works. He uses aboriginal song lines, stories from the Koyukon people of northwestern Alaska, the philosophy of phenomenology, and the speeches of Socrates to paint a poetic landscape that explains how we became separated from the earth in the first place. With minimal environmental doomsaying, Abram discusses how we can begin to recover a sustainable relationship with the earth and the nonhuman beings who live among us--in the more-than-human world. --Kathryn True

David Abrams takes us on a journey back to ourselves and the route passes between the Scylla and Charybdis of discursive language. Abrams' thesis is that phonetic writing and the language associated with it separate us from the natural world. The primitive had language tied to the hunt and landscape; the modern has language in books and in his cerebrum. In one of the longer acts of irony I have ever observed, Abrams uses exquisite language to return us to an appreciation of and participation in the natural, "more than human" world from which he claims language has estranged us. His examples are marvelous. Consider the Judaic scholars of the early middle ages, penning their Torahs and other documents without vowels; this syntactical arrangement forced the reader to consider where "the wind is to blow" and in so blowing infuse language with the creative wind of God. But we are far from that today. Now we must put down our books, listen to the wind, and consider the hawk on its windhover. If we do we are returned to ourselves.

This book is probably one of the best books written. and I am a huge bibliophile. I wish I was eloquent at giving review because I can't give enough praise for Abram's work. He writes beautifully, and with excellent sources and scholarship, about the natural world and our perceptions and place in it. If this book were food - I'd eat it up. If you are looking to fall in love with the natural world in a way that changes your own - get ready for the most amazing ride.

A fascinating analysis of how written phonetic language has contributed to our cultural disengagement from the natural world, the author argues that beginning with the introduction of written language humanity began to lose its deep and profound connection with the natural world, replacing our perception of the language of nature with a kind of animistic interaction with written words. Thought-provoking, even if tedious at times. Whatever you think of the rest of the book, be sure not to miss the final chapter (Coda), which is brilliant and beautiful. As an aside, I tried the meditative technique the author recommends in Part II of Chapter 6 and was thrilled with the results. Highly recommended.

I have long loved this book. I had occasion to recommend it again, and also have a moment to write a note about it... a rare synchronicity! So this: The few other reviews do a great job of describing the framework of relationship of the human to 'other-than-human' as exemplified in the evolution of increasingly complex abstractions of our communication systems, from pictograph to alphabet. From representation to communication by agreement that a symbol, and its related sounds mean a thing. What is passed over is the weaving of the story between the technical and the experienced. So I introduced the book thusly: It is an interesting book that weaves two stories together.. One of the experienced, "Other-Than-Human" world - of all types, from animal to insect, and charting the path of the human communication from the pictorial representation of the world as experienced, to the abstractions that make up the alphabet and the dictionary of words. Most of which have little direct association w the thing they are describing. In that movement of what might be called sophistication, he posits that our human experience has become increasingly split off from the rest of the world as our filter of engagement & experiences with the Other World(s) is increasingly via the cognitive & descriptive and less of the wordless, amazed, truly "awe-some" experience. I know I feel this lack.It is split that creates so many of the large and complex problems we are dealing with today. We tend to think we understand the systems we are sometimes rather slapdashedly mucking around with... We do not. What we do not typically reckon with is how integrated life is. And that it is more than a hallmark card, or a sappy new age chant to say that everything is connected to everything...Not knowing this is central to what we call "unintended consequences", but really are more accurately "unconscious consequences". While we have also gained some learning and benefit from our reductionist science, there is no doubt of that... if we do not heed the opening introduction of this book, and its basic prescription for our consideration : That to be human... a vital, life living , life supporting person/life force we Must have some meaningful relationship with the Other-Than-Human.For other books that work out that thesis in fact if not directly I'd suggest The Elephant Whisperer, and related books. And almost anything by Carl Safina. Especially "Song of the Blue Ocean".

I'm not smart enough to summarize this book. The subjects covered are complicated but author writes in an interesting way. Even if the reader has trouble understanding this and some of terminology used, you will learn something. Gives credit where due for his ideas. This reading is, for me, something I have to go back over to better understand the ideas presented. Pushes your vocabulary. Sorry I can't better explain this but for me at least, this was difficult reading. Thought-provoking and interesting book.
