For thousands of years we have been trying to understand who God is, as he reveals more and more to us over time. This book about God was actually recommended to me in a book by Antony Flew, a former atheist. I figured if he enjoyed it and it was convincing, then I would enjoy it too. I was not disappointed. The author has however gone back and revised this first book so it is up to date on modern arguments.Richard Swinburne begins his book by setting down the rules of the discussion. By “theism” he plainly states that God exists and that he is present everywhere, knows all things and is worthy of worship. The content of this book is concerned with the philosophy of religion and does not set out to prove God exists. Although much of it seems like proof to me. This book is more about whether or not a belief in God is coherent or metaphysically possible.For modern readers getting through chapter two and three may be tough as the material is very detailed and there are many explanations about how sentences can be perceived. Finally by chapter four (22% into the book), the author has mentioned God and in chapter five, the book really gets started. So don't give up reading if you find the first four chapters challenging. The best is yet to come.Before continuing and reading the information on words used in theology, I did not know it could get so complicated. Words like “eternity” do not always mean what you think they mean apparently. I don't think any human can fully comprehend eternity in the past, but we are pretty good about imagining eternity in the future.The book continues with a discussion about God being free to always make the best choice and act in the best way. In some ways the book educates you on the psychology of God. Next up is omnipotence and whether or not God really can do anything. God of course can't do anything that goes against his character or do something evil. The common questions is raised as to whether God can make a stone that is too heavy for him to lift. Finally we get to omniscience which gave me a lot to think about. If God is outside time, everything may have already happened. I still think at times God somehow intervenes in our lives for our own good.Richard Swinburne then talks about immutability but I've read that God can change his mind. His general nature cannot be changed however, as many believe. Then there is a short discussion on timelessness but in itself this is a bit of a mind boggle. Can God step in and out of time?As you can tell, this book points in many directions but it is up to the reader to make the final decisions about what to believe or not to believe. I found this book all consuming intellectually. Richard Swinburne draws on arguments from many of the greatest thinkers in the past. There are also extensive footnotes after each chapter if you want to study any ideas further in various books.By reading this book I came to the conclusion that God must be very amused that we humans spend so much time trying to figure him out. And he must really laugh when some say he doesn't exist. I mean if you were God you'd probably think that was extremely funny.The only thing I wish the author had discussed in detail is how God can be Love. But beyond that this book was a very satisfying read and I learned a great deal. As some have said, having a relationship with God is one of the most incredible experiences you can have while residing on earth. God is kind, funny, thoughtful and so many amazing things that knowing him is bliss for the heart and mind. While this book leads you into a more intellectual journey, it in some ways proves why God is worthy of our worship and respect.For further study I'd recommend Knowing God by Packer and The Case for God by Lee Strobel.~The Rebecca Review

Jenefer Davies is the Associate Professor of Dance at Washington and Lee University and Artistic Director of the W&L Repertory Dance Company. Her choreography and performance work has toured to Spain, Greece, Scotland and throughout the United States. Davies founded the contemporary modern dance company, Progeny Dance, which has performed at Green Space and Dixon Place in Manhattan, and The Center for Performance Research in Brooklyn. Finding a book for first-time dads that isn't a bro'd-out, lame joke-book with gags about staring at your partners breasts was staggeringly harder to find than I'd expected. I've read two of Brott's books—this one and it's series predecessor The Expectant Father—and both are superb, down-to-earth, informed guides to give you calm peace of mind when the newborn arrives. If you actually want to learn and be spoken to like an adult rather than an overgrown child, this is the book (and series) for you.

The book is broken up into sections (chapters, I suppose) like 1 Week and 1 Month, and I have been reading the book in accordance with these milestones as my daughter reaches them and so far this book is spot on. There is a wealth of information here for questions you may have about anything from leading up to delivery to a year down the road. I was able to ask intelligent questions the day my daughter was born about things like APGAR scores, etc. that they never would have bothered telling me had I never known to ask. I have been thoroughly impressed, and downright comforted at times by the information in this text and highly recommend it to any first time dads.

Got this book for my husband after he read the author’s pregnancy book & loved it. He is not a reader at all- we’ve been together over 10 years & I can count on one hand all the books he’s read in that time! He loves how the chapters are broken up by month, he usually reads one month ahead of whatever stage baby is at. We both really like the authors humor throughout the book, but he also has some really great and informative info in there too! Some of it doesn’t apply to everyone & is a little outdated- assuming dad will go back to work & mom will care for baby... But we just laugh at that stuff & move on...

I purchased The New Father after reading the Expectant Father while my wife was pregnant. I like the layout of the chapters by month and also the format of the information provided including understanding what the baby is up to, what mom is up to, and what I may be feeling. Some parts of the book are a little woo woo and new age for me. On the whole, though the book has a lot of practical pieces of advice and also has given me a ton of confidence with my little one. In particular, the step by step on how to change a diaper made it super easy for me to change my first one and after that, I started to feel like I could do this. I think it also helped me gain the trust of my wife who appreciated that I was interested (and probably also that I was dealing with the diaper in the first place) and looked like I wasn't completely lost. I did also purchase the audible book and recommend that in addition to the hardcopy. I listened to chapters a couple of times on the way to work and even while running which allowed some concepts that were more complex to sink in more thoroughly.

I like this book, but the guy I had in mind to purchase this for is a hands-on, doesn't stop to read much type. He has a receptive disorder too, but I was looking for something to give valuable insight because he and his gf are expecting. This book is really insightful, straight forward and educational, it covers all the stuff, BUT, there were only a few comic strip style pictures, and the information was long and detailed (which is great for the detailed and avid reader)! But for the guy I had in mind, I don't think he's going to get through very much before it gets set down and forgotten about. I was looking for a book that was shorter, more simple in style, with pictures, yet still serious and informative. This wasn't it. But it was still an excellent book and if the dad-to-be is a good reader and enjoys reading, he would surely benefit from this one!

Super book for my husband a FTD. We loved the pregnancy book in this series and plan to buy the following books as our little one grows up. These books have a great sense of humor and cover important topics that some other books may gloss over due to being too yucky, serious, or being a feminine issue. We just wish there was more of a week by week feature (instead of month) as it's fun to read the chapters as your child grows, but we understand why the book was divided up this way.

I really like the book. It's written good and easy to understand. The author talks about his own experience.I purchased the book when my wife was 4 months pregnant so I would have enough time to read it. I'm not a big reader :-).I should've done more research because the author wrote more than one book. The first one is called the expecting father, so this book is the second one of the series and obviously, the first book contains some information that would've been nice to know.Overall, I give it 4 Stars.

Do you have an outspoken, know-it-all uncle who'd spout off advice at the Thanksgiving table without any reasonable backup to his claims? Prepare to enjoy it in written form.I think Armin's heart is in the right place; he wants fathers to be more confident in how they can nurture help their new children. But his (seldom) oddball approach has only reinforce one key lesson in fatherhood: you need to find your own way for your one-of-a-kind child.If that was the real lesson, then thank you.

The guide itself might have been worthwhile, but the INDEX was TERRIBLE!. If I knew the precise names of possible sight-seeing spots, then I wouldn't need a guidebook. Here's a great example: Wyoming is known for having an extensive amount of dinosaur fossils, but you won't find any mention of dinosaurs in the index --- unless you know the name of a dinosaur museum!! This book was abandoned in a hotel room (I apologize to the cleaning staff who ended up throwing it out), as there was no point in taking it on the remainder of our trip. Good thing I got the book used ...

There are lots of great recommendations here. Very useful for planning an itinerary. Lots of the restaurants it recommends are closed (we went to Montana and Wyoming about 9 years after the publication date of the book), but the recommended restaurants that were still in business were all very good. I look forward to the next edition because we definitely plan to go back to Montana and Wyoming some time!

I downloaded this onto my Kindle a week before a trip to Glacier National Park, and I was so glad I did! It saved us a lot of money right off the bat by giving us a tip about Access Passes to the national parks. We had no idea that my husband's disability would enable us to get into the National Parks and some other attractions free. He got the passes before we left town. It also saved us time and money by evaluating the hotels all around the park and in Whitefish. It gave the hours of operation and costs of many attractions which was very helpful in deciding what to do and when to do it. I would highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Montana, and I hope to use it next year for a trip to Yellowstone!
